“Kinda sort science fiction”/“arguably in the science fiction genre”…
What could that be? Magical Realism? Horror? I believe all of Stephen King’s novels from that time period have been adapted to the screen.(One could argue The Stand is kinda sci-fi) Although we haven’t ruled out short stories…
Some mostly realistic post-apocalyptic work like The Road, The Postman, Lucifer’s Hammer or On The Beach? (3 of those have had movies and 2 are from the wrong time period - so it’s unlikely to be any of those specific examples). The sci-fi aspect is mostly limited to the setup.
Still pondering…
Well, let’s see if we can eliminate short stories.
DQ: From a novel?
One DQ held.
Well I’m stumped. Prof, if you want to use my last DQ before the deadline, go ahead.
Okay!
DQ: From a work by Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury or Kurt Vonnegut?
Sorry. Very busy here.

Not comin’ up with anything so far.
Stand-alone novel from 1971-1984. No movie adaptation. Main character, could be alive today. Kinda-sorta sci-fi.
I’m coming up blank.
It bugs me that I can’t even come up with a good guess on this one.
Ok, time’s up. I am
Earl Turner
The protagonist of the 1978 novel The Turner Diaries, a racist and anti-Semitic future-history novel called “the Bible of the racist right” by the FBI. Timothy McVeigh, among other idiots, was a fan.
I will pass on starting the next round. Would someone start a July thread, please?
I don’t remember the book or the character, so you should take the next round, Chock.
I’ve heard of the book, mainly in connection to the alt-right movement. Never thought about actually reading it. I just did a search in worldcat. None of the local public libraries carry it, but most of the local university libraries have it. The main subject category is “dystopia”. Alternative history definitely gets grouped in with sci-fi or speculative fiction.
I’m preoccupied with holiday festivities today. I’ll start a July thread tomorrow.
Thanks, CFOHG.
Haven’t read the book myself, and can’t post a link to the Wiki article with my phone, but there’s an interesting article on it there. Amazon won’t sell it anymore, new or used.
