Yeah, I just don’t know any native German songwriters, especially in country or classical music, which is how I interpreted your answer to DQs 17 and 21. I thought perhaps some Scandinavian death metal songwriter, but DQ 21 squelched that. Then I wondered if it were Marshall Mathers - Eminem - as he apparently speaks German; but of course, he’s an American whose native tongue is English.
Is this one of those where I’m going to be facepalming and wondering how I could have missed it?
Yeah, and the the thing is, I can think of a handful of of bands or musicians from Scandinavia - Sigur Ròs, Björk, Ace of Bass, Of Monsters and Men - but none that aren’t known for performing music.
Argh. Thought I had a bolt of inspiration today - Yngwie Malmsteen, about whom I know nothing more than he’s a Scandinavian musician (a Swede, I discovered); but it turns out he’s a guitarist. So much for bolts from the blue, dammit.
It would appear I stumped you. I am frequently cited by Boomers and Gen-Xers as the reason all today’s pop music sounds the same, for I am the most successful songwriter so far of the 21rst Century, the Swedish songwriter and producer Max Martin. First came to prominence with the late 90s wave of teen idol popstars, writing most of Britney Spears’ and Backstreet Boys’ big hits. In this century has written hits for Taylor Swift, P!nk, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande among others. Currently have 25 Billboard #1 songs, second only to some English songwriting team named Lennon and McCartney.
I believe the rule for a too-obscure person is to revert back to the previous host. Take it away, @Slow_Moving_Vehicle!! (in a new thread for December, of course!)
Okay, but who determines notability? I’d suggest a poll of the active players; if more of us have heard of Max Martin than not, he’s not too obscure for the game. Obviously EH and I, being out-of-touch old fuddyduddies, haven’t heard of this bird, and you have; so maybe it’s down to @Prof.Pepperwinkle, @Buck_Godot, @kitap, @SCAdian and @Dr.Winston_OBoogie.
