He published extensively on fossil fishes, but it was his work on glacial geology that’s most usually remembered today. During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a statue of him fell off the front of the Zoology department building at Stanford, and got embedded head-down in the plaza. Supposedly, this inspired David Starr Jordan, the university president, to quip that he always preferred Agassiz in the concrete to Agassiz in the abstract.
