Bingo! (I did this twice - once solo.) I am in fact Reinhold Messner.
I figured that “roughly analogous to scuba diving” might describe mountaineering, so I first thought of “that Seven Years in Tibet guy”, only to discover he was Heinrich Harrer. I knew there was a “Reinhart Meisner” or something like that, so I Googled a few names of that sort until I discovered that Reinhold Messner was the man’s true identity.

Good work. His accomplishments are legendary - I doubt there’s anyone else who’s a strong candidate for “greatest mountaineer in history.” His solo, no-oxygen climb of Mt. Everest definitely falls into the category “Just because he did it doesn’t mean it’s possible.”

After discovering he is not American I also thought of mountain climbers. But I didn’t have a chance to look for him. Well played, Sternvogel!
