Adam Schefter has tweeted that Brad Childress has been fired as Vikings head coach and replaced on an interim basis by Leslie Frazier.
Good riddance.
ESPN has confirmation from the Vikings. Their season went to hell long ago, so they might as well see how Frazier does as coach. I wonder what he’ll do with Favre, if Favre even cares anymore.
Vikings have confirmed. It’s about time!
I’m sad to see Childress go, because it’s been so fun watching the Vikings self destruct this year. They had a team built for Super Bowl success, with an outstanding run defense, one of the best young running backs to enter the NFL, an up and coming playmaker (Harvin), and some very good free agent signings (Jared Allen, Antoine Winfield). And they get a 40 year old quarterback to play his best season ever for them. The Packers/Vikings rivalry heats up, they get national coverage, and a pretty good core of players.
Then, it all went to hell. It’s one thing to watch the Lions struggle under Matt Millen; they were a bad team with iffy talent and a bad front office. It’s another to watch a very good team fuck it up.
I admit, I thought I was wrong. I had thought that Chilly becoming Favre’s peg boy and Favre’s issues with ball security would lead to a meltdown last year. Instead, they had a lot of success. I thought things like team chemistry, Chilly letting Favre skip training camps, and the like would make the Vikings struggle. I was right, though, just a year early. Watching them screaming at each other and Favre and Bevel getting into it was just fun this weekend.
Chilly had a hand in putting together a very good football team, so he deserves a great deal of credit for that. But he lost the respect of his players, and now, his job. Of course, he’s not the first coach to lose his job because of a QB, and he won’t be the last.
Best of Luck, Brad. Wish you coulda stayed around longer. I liked the soap opera.
Kind of cool that the Packers got Wade fired last week and Chilly this week.
Chilly is not a great game day coach, but I still maintain that he is an excellent talent evaluator. The whole Favtre thing this season has completely backfired and I am not sure that is his fault as much as it is whta Favre wants Favre gets. It is time to sit Favre and let Tavaris jackson show if he can lead this team (BTW the Vikes went 10-6 in 2008), we’ll see Frazier has the mojo to do that. If not they will have no idea what they will do at QB…
Godbye stadium, hello LA.
Los Angeles Vikings?? Nah they are gonna hva to change the team name.
Wade was 2 weeks ago, but yeah, now 2 coaches in 14 days have been fired the day after their teams got pantsed by the Packers.
There are as many Vikings in Los Angeles as there are lakes.
It was a fun soap opera to watch and as a Bears fan, I enjoyed every minute of it.
The seeds were sown last year with Favre but I still didn’t expect such a colapse of epic proportions. Of course, last year, they were winning so it was all good.
Now, I just need the Packers to lose a few…
Packers = Coach Killers
While it was 2 weeks ago, the week between was the Packer’s off-week. So they did get Phillips & Childress in consecutive games
As I noted in the Week 11 thread, they still have the 49ers, Bears and Giants on the schedule. Teams that may all have some very hot seats when they get to town.
Giants??
Bears??
There’s been a lot of media talk about his time running out and if the critics are right and another big second half swoon is in the making for these Giants he’ll be in trouble. Some the NYer around here might be better able to say how much fire there is with that smoke, but if week 16 rolls around and the Giants are desperate to hold onto a Wildcard hope and they get pounded by the Packers the NY papers will asking for his head.
If you’ve ever read any of my comments for the past 4 seasons you should know the answer to this one.
The implication that you were making seemed to me that he could be fired after the Packers game, which isn’t going to happen. As for Lovie Smith, seeinng as how the Packers play them in week 17, then I guess it is entirely possible he gets fired after that game.
Well, if the Giants are eliminated from the playoffs versus the Packers in Week 16 I’m gonna go ahead and give them credit for killing Coughlin should he be fired at the end of the year.
I would put the percentage chance of Coughlin getting fired at less than 1 or 2 percent. Due to the impending lockout, there are way too many potential setbacks for teams to gut their coaching staffs - new coaching staff means new system, new terminology, and teams with smart front offices (like the Giants) would not likely be so foolish, imho, to put themselves in the position of having to implement a new system once the lockout ends.
BTW, Frazier has said that he will not be starting TJax over Favre. As if there wass going to be any doubt.
