I think the Dutch have clearly been better since the Mexico goal. They were certainly uninspired the entire first half.
That’s a shame.

Well that leaves a bad taste in the mouth and I wanted The Netherlands to win.
Robben is far too good a player to have to stoop to that, but he does again and again. It wasn’t even his first dive in this game. Yes, The Netherlands were denied a clear penalty at the end of the first half but that … urgh.
Oh, poor Mexico. That was heartbreaking.
Sure, they improved, and my comment was more out of frustration than anything, but i don’t think they were better than Mexico for the majority of the game.
Funny thing is. i think it was a genuine penalty, but he still dived in such a way as to make the most out of it. It’s what he does.

There was contact but nowhere near enough to bring Robben down like that. Classic two motion dive as well, I’m amazed any referee gives them these days when they go down like that. It is the calling card of the dive.

I think that penalty was bogus.
So which remaining team has NOT had a game where they really struggled? Brazil has draw twice (plus PKs), the Dutch have come from behind twice against what aren’t thought of as world class teams, Argentina barely beat Iran, Germany drew against Ghana.

The Dutch poured on the pressure, Mexico couldn’t hold it. Not the result I wanted to see.
France went 0-0 against Ecuador that was one man down. Granted, they didn’t need to score to pass the next round.
Went in supporting the Netherlands but Mexico played the better game and, IMHO, deserved to go on. What a heartbreaking result.
It happened again! Mexico makes it to the round of 16, plays a good game, is maybe even ahead most of the game (I think against Germany in 1998 was like that), but finds a way to lose.

Mexico seemed to be sitting on their lead which is always dangerous especially against a good team. If the game had gone to extra time you would have backed the Dutch to pull it off.
