I’m currently watching Costa Rica v. England on ESPN2 and they brought up the red card in the Italy game. Seconds later they brought up a box showing the game time and that ESPN was showing the game, perhaps as a sign that maybe you’d be better off watching that game.
Worse than Iran/Nigeria? Didn’t see it but by most accounts that was a snoozer.
And Suarez is hungry again.
Goal for Uruguay!
Just after Suarez appeared to take a bite out of the Italian defender’s shoulder.
This is getting ugly.
Hey, this is neither here nor there, but with the match being so boring it seems like a good time:
Is it really a good strategy for teams to send so many goal kicks booming deep? They only seem to retain possession a little more than half the time, and it’s not like it often leads to quick breakaway goals. Wouldn’t it be wiser to advance the ball by stages and more reliably retain possession?
It wasn’t particularly interesting, no. But the teams showed excellent sportsmanship from start to finish, so I think it still ranks ahead of this match — even with a goal now scored.
Now that Italy have to press for a goal, and can’t just choke up their own half of the field, we could see Uruguay score again.
Suarez is going to be banned for the rest of the World Cup if FIFA can prove that he bit Chiellini. What the hell is wrong with that guy?
Not broke, dont fix. Cant we trust the ref to assess this situation and use his yellow cards like he’s already allowed to. Are we going to need video replay to make sure a ref does not miss a player calling him asshole to his face?
Glad Italy is out but I really hate Suarez.
Suarez needs to be expelled from football, not suspended and I say that as a long time Liverpool fan.
OK, I understand that it comes naturally to Suarez to use his huge front teeth as his main offensive weapon, but come on. Has he forgotten what happened the last time? Does he want to watch the rest of this WC from the stands?
Congratulations to Costa Rica on winning the group. Hope they go far in the knockout round.
With any justice, Suarez gets a nice lifetime ban from FIFA for being a cannibal on the field. If there was honor, Tabarez would kick him off the team this afternoon.
What is it, the third time he bit someone. Only benefit is that uruguay isn’t going to last long without him.
I have to agree. There’s no excuse for biting an opposing player three times, not to mention all the other assholery he’s engaged in. Who would even want to be on the same pitch as him at this point? Jeez, who would even want to be in the same room as him at this point? I certainly don’t want to watch him ever play again.
I just hope FIFA doesn’t fall for his forthcoming tearful apologies. Don’t get fooled again.
Ditto, on both counts.
I’ve supported Liverpool since i was a kid, but i’m embarrassed to have him on the team, no matter how many brilliant goals he scores.
As much as I want to see Suarez banned for, at least, this World Cup (or, ideally, international competition - I’ll take club competition as well, but FIFA isn’t going that far), I’m glad that the dive-happy Italians are out of the Cup.
Damn. All set to root for Uruguay and then Suarez.
The game wasn’t the best, but I’m thrilled Uruguay is moving forward!
This has been an amazing tournament so far for the Americas. 7 of the 10 American teams are through already. Only 2 of the 13 European teams are. No American teams have been eliminated, and 5 European teams are already gone. Europe is likely to catch up a little as the rest of the groups are settled, but dang.
In other news, women in Iran are defying rules to prevent them from watching sports in public with men. ![]()
Italy deservedly lost, though Uruguay wasn’t much better (and Suarez is just crazy), but the red card was a bad joke. It was hardly a yellow.
