If Germany wins 2-0 I think Portugal would need 4-1 to go through. Just barely possible I suppose.
Correct, unless the Portuguese can win 4-1 or 5-1. If the US loses by 1, Portugal need a 4-goal win, and if the US loses by 2, Portugal need a 3-goal win.

These World Cup group double-games are a pretty unique form of sporting excitement aren’t they? So many permutations to keep in mind and the situation can turn so quickly when goals are scored in both game as happened here in the second half.
This group was the most interestingly poised with all four teams having a chance to go through. It would have been even more exciting if Portugal hadn’t lost by so much to Germany.

Fair enough that Germany and USA go through. Germany looked ominously comfortable there. They restricted the USA to very few chances (apart from the couple right at the end). Brazil and Argentina won’t be too happy to them standing in their way.

USA played Germany about as well as any team will in this WC. The Germans had the ball for almost 2.5 minutes without an American touching it in the opening half. And those USA chances in extra time were amazing.
Now onto Group H. Go Rossiya! It’ll be on at midnight here, but folks will be watching. A win pits them against Germany.
