Bread VS Pizza.

I have something I just must ask here.

Do you think bread is better than pizza or pizza better than bread?
Pay no attention to the fact that you usually need bread (or at least a form of it) to make the pizza crust…take the two things how you will. I’m not going to put any specifics on this poll, it’s basically just whatever it means to you.

Now, to me, pizza is clearly superior to bread, but apparently I’ve had a lot disagree with me in the past few weeks.

What say you?

Pizza as a meal, but bread as the cornerstone of a sandwich.

Incidentally, frozen waffles mak a great replacement for store-bought bread in sandwiches.

Define “better.”

Not to screw up anything for Idle (honestly I am not following you around, I just happened to notice this thread) but bread is so much more than just an item to eat the way pizza is.

I have bread of some sort with nearly every meal, I would seriously miss it if it went away. Dinner roles, Bagels, Sourdough toast, naan, pita, lavash…we are talking some heavy stuff when you think about what bread really means to us as a people.

Pizza is fantastic, but it just isn’t as important or as universally necessary as bread.

So do donuts, apparently.

I can’t really compare a piece of bread and a piece of pizza. If I’m making a sandwhich, I want bread. if I want pizza, I want pizza.

Actually, NAF1138 brought up a point I forgot to mention in my initial reply. What I meant to say was “Pizza as a meal, but bread as the cornerstone of a sandwich or as a component of a meal”.

Pizza and gravy sounds pretty gross, and I don’t want greasy, cheesy bread as an accompaniment to roast.

Okay, let me redefine it a bit better. If you had to choose, which would you rather be left with to eat (doing with either of the two what you want (I.E. making sandwiches out of the bread)…a pizza or a loaf of bread?

Basically, I give you a choice for dinner tonight…A pizza…or a loaf of bread (to do with what you please). Which do you want?

No, I get what you’re saying, but that’s not what I’m asking.

If I said “Hey, NAF, what do you want for dinner tonight? It’s on me. You can have either pizza or a loaf of bread (and with the bread, if you want to make sandwiches of your choice, that’s fine).” Which would you pick?

That’s what I’m asking. : )

That’s like asking, “what’s better - bread or bagels?”. It makes no sense. Pizza is a type of bread.

Loaf of bread of my chosing? Do I get to have any options either topping wise or eat with the bread wise?

What about “Pizza Bread” ?

A slice of bread weighs about one ounce, so a loaf of bread (depending on the loaf) will make about 8-12 sandwiches.

You can also make cinnamon toast, French toast and all sorts of yummy concoctions out of bread.

The real question is, “Hey, Idle Thoughts, do you want to eat pizza for your next 10 meals, or would you rather have a loaf of bread?”

I’ll take the bread. Make it a flat bread. And I’ll top it with some tomato sauce and cheese, and fire it in the oven for a bit first.

Well, depends on the bread and the pizza. Still, it’s a question I can’t really answer. If you’re saying the best examples of each, and for the loaf of bread I get to pick any and all the best ingredients I want to go along with it, then I’d certainly go with the bread, as I have many more options with what to do with it.

I’m don’t eat bread.

I am eating pizza right this very minute. No crust.

How do you eat pizza without bread or crust?

Soup or oatmeal? Canned peaches or canned corn? Vanilla wafers or coffee cake?

what kind of question is this? Just tonight, or forever? Tonight, if offered pizza, I’d take pizza. Why would I want a loaf of bread, or a slice of bread? How about a croissant?

Given the choice between any sandwich I want and pizza, I’ll take pizza. Always.

Now I want a cracker-crust pizza as the bread in a sandwich.

Croissant counts as bread, as do other pasteries in that particular family. (Why do I know this, because it was decided on Giraffe Boards when the question came up the first time around.)

Quick breads don’t count, strangely enough, because you don’t produce any gluten. It was decided that they were more like cake than bread. Biscuits and rolls do count, as do bagels and all other things like that.

I didn’t come up with the system, don’t ask, I have just been heavily involved in that particular debate and think we shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel over here.

ETA:

Also, I would add that anything so complex as to require a definition in order to have the conversation is inherently superior to pizza…but maybe I should save that argument for the other board where passions about this sort of thing seem to run a bit higher.

(This ETA remark was made solely for the benefit of Idle Thoughts)
