Breaking: 2 Dead, 4 Injured--Shooting at University North Carolina at Charlotte

Two people were killed and four others are hurt after shots were fired at the UNC Charlotte campus on Tuesday afternoon, Medic confirmed.

Two of the people who were shot have life-threatening injuries, according to Medic. As of 7 p.m., the lockdown on the campus was continuing. About a half-hour later, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police tweeted that the “scene was secure” and that they had one person in custody.

This kind of violence on college campuses is much more common than previously.

NBC Charlotte has just learned the suspect in the deadly UNC Charlotte campus shooting that happened Tuesday evening is a former student at the school. Officials said 22-year-old Trystan Terrell was a History major at UNC Charlotte but dropped out this semester.

NBC Charlotte was on the scene when Terrell was escorted to CMPD headquarters. The suspect appeared to smile out our camera and then shouted something we were not able to decipher.

Two friends of mine were killed and another severely wounded in a school shooting in 2015. It happened in a classroom I had taken several classes in as an undergrad.

A friend of mine from Oklahoma messaged me this morning. Her sister was in a classroom close to where the shooting was happening. Apparently they had to lock the door and cram into a supply closet. She and everyone else was texting out goodbyes before the all clear was given.

Small world.

Facing a gunman in his classroom, Riley Howell chose to fight. Authorities said Wednesday that the 21-year-old student at the University of North Carolina’s campus here knocked the assailant off his feet at a pivotal moment in Tuesday’s shooting, saving the lives of others even as Howell himself received a mortal wound.

Kerr Putney, chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, described Howell as “the first and foremost hero” in an incident that left two dead and four injured but could have turned out far worse.

“But for his work, the assailant may not have been disarmed,” Putney said of Howell in a televised news conference. “Unfortunately, he gave his life in the process. But his sacrifice saved lives.”

I’ve read multiple articles about Riley Howell and he deserves all sorts of praise. He was shot three times, the last at point blank range in the head and he brought the gunman down. Many of us imagine we could do the brave thing when confronted with such a situation but the reality is that most of us would not. But he did. I’m sad for his family and friends but they can be proud of his actions that day.
