So then how did the cartel guy know what number to call?
The Wire had an entire storyline built around the disposable phones, or “burners” as they called them.
Maybe Gus reserved that phone for calls from the cartel, like some people have different e-mail accounts.
Why the heck do they show a new episode only every 7 days? Sunday doesn’t come soon enough.
needscoffee, I know! Good thing there’s Justified on Tuesday – that helps shorten the week a bit. It’s the only other show I watch regularly.
One of the DEAs has to say WTF about the twin flipping out when he sees Walt.
Where are Gus’s loyalties? Not to the Mexican cartels apparently. Is he working for a Colombian or Brazilian cartel? We know he has South American background (“Never trust a South American”- Don Salamanco in previous episode.) The hints at a mole within the local DEA office smell of CIA or shadowy government operations.
Skyler is in conflict. She sees through Walt’s BS but chooses to shelter her son’s opinion of him. Does she suspect Walt’s business is somehow connected with Hank’s shooting?
In real life Giancarlo Esposito is the son of an African-American mother and an Italian father and was raised in Europe and in NYC, so he has a great “not from around here” voice wherever he goes and is obviously multiracial, plus the name Fring is so unusual it doesn’t appear on thetop 88,000 surnames list (closest match is Fringer- the 35,810th most common surname in the 2000 Census). I think the surname (a derivation of Fringe, perhaps?) and the actor were deliberately chosen in part so that if they ever give him a backstory he can be anything from South American to Canadian to Ethiopian to Sicilian to Apache or some combo thereof without any credibility problems, though it’s probably best not to give him a backstory because he works so much better as a man of mystery (a kindly nerdy civic booster who happens to know who’s buried in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and can wipe out drug cartels with a little planning). And I love him- to quote Jon Lovitz’s character from Talk Radio “Doesn’t the realization he’s evil just make you want to serve him all the more?” And he cooks!
The only hint we’ve been given at his private life is that he speaks Spanish but not as fluently as English and he might have children who despise him (his lecture to Walt about providing for family even if they don’t have anything to do with you).
They’ll probably just figure he was out of his mind due to painkillers, losing his legs, and was coming at the cops in general.
Even knowing a whole lot more than the cops on the show and even Hank know about his shooting, it’s hard to decide whether Walt is responsible for it. He’s connected to it, but Hank was taking out drug cartel members long before Walt entered the picture and they’re not known for their forgiving nature, and Tuko completely needed killing.
I thought Gus was declaring war against the cartel when he ordered the hit on Hank, but his motives were unclear. This episode gave clues as to why Gus would do that. I just realized the name of Gus’ restaurant is Los Pollos Hermanos. Does this mean Gus has a brother? That would be awesome. I can’t get enough of this character.
I found it interesting that when Marie went off on Walt and started blaming him for Hank’s shooting, Skylar defended him even though she would suspect that maybe Walt did have something to do with it.
I’d even wondered if it had something to do with the twins (maybe named after them when they were kids since he obviously knew their uncle then) but apparently not. If David Lynch directed the show you’d learn he had an adopted brother who was a chicken perhaps, but I doubt they’ll explain; if they do, I think Amaury Nolasco would be great for the role.
Anyone wonder if they’re doing something with the titles of multiple episodes this season? Like last season’s 747 Down Over ABQ? So far there have been two that consist of letters – I.F.T. and I See You. Both can be explained by what happens in the episode, of course, but I wonder if you put them all together if you get anything interesting. According to epguides.com there’s an upcoming episode called (I don’t know if upcoming episode titles are cause for spoiling, but I will err on the side of caution):
Abiquiu
So far I got nothin’. But there may be others who are better at anagrams than I am.
Just Google it.
I figured it must be a place name because it has too much similarity to Albuquerque.
Off topic, but has anybody else tried to figure out how’d they’d spell their names in the periodic table credits style?
Gilligan said in an interview that he wasn’t going to do that again, but I’m not sure he can be trusted.
