Breaking Bad 5.06 "Buyout" 8/19/12

She takes after her brother.

I don’t see how Walt could have set up a deal like that in just the time he was escaped from the cuffs. To begin with he doesn’t even have any contacts with the Phoenix crew, etc…

I don’t think he set up a deal, he just came up with an idea.

I think whatever Walt’s plan is, it was already in place before he got handcuffed. Remember he was heading there to grab the methlymine. I doubt he was just going to take it and run.

Yes. That’s what I meant.

We’re agreed that he showed no remorse about shooting the kid. And I think we agree that’s not how a normal person reacts. Then again, there aren’t a lot of normal people on this show. Among the main characters, only Jesse seems to really object to the idea of killing people. I didn’t get the sense Todd shot the kid because he likes killing people or that he kept the spider as a trophy to celebrate what he’d done, and I don’t think the show is going to distract from the threads they’ve been developing for years by making Walt deal with a serial killer [that feels very Dexter-y, although I’ve never watched that show]. I think the focus is going to be on Todd killing Drew as a result of what Jesse said. I see that as a new way of exploring the show’s idea of consequences and being the boss.

Agreed that it’s a side point, but I don’t think what you are describing is serial killing. It’s just being a multiple murderer, which also describes Walt, Jesse, Mike, and many of their drug world associates.

Well, the obvious idea he might have had is to sell the finished product to the Phoenix crew, instead of just selling them the methylamine.

Speaking of, this Declan character seems vaguely familiar - have we seen/heard about him before? I can’t recall any specific instances.

Yes but I suspect that the writers are more clever than that.

“But I’m used to that at home. You know what I mean?” Cracked me up…

I’m participating in a thread on another site where everyone thinks that the plan is something along those lines. I can’t see it being that boring. Jesse was really excited about Walt’s plan. “Walt’s going to cook for Phoenix” is not the sort of plan you go nuts over. It also doesn’t fit with Walt’s admission that he wants to build an empire. Cooking for Phoenix puts him back working for someone else.

The plan is going to be something clever. It is going to be something worthy of this show. I have no idea what it is, but if it’s “Walt cooks for Phoenix” I will eat Heisenberg’s hat.

Right. They’ve done that before, and Walt is fixated on being the boss. If he’s cooking for someone else, he’s not the boss.

I’m starting to admire Mike’s patience. I’d probably have given up long before.

After Walt’s comment about Mike’s buyout helping “the competition,” I think Walt’s going to have his eye on expanding his empire outside of NM and into AZ by getting Declan to start working for him as a franchisee of some sort.

Can we assume from next week’s preview that the meeting with the Phoenix crew means that Mike decided to go along with this plan?

We could wrap up this series in the next two episodes. Mike goes ahead and shoots Walter in the head, Jesse breaks out the hydrofluoric, they sell the methylamine to Declan and ride off into the sunset.

Everybody wins.

(I love a happy ending.)

Except only Walter knows where the methylamine is.

Doh! Well, in that case you pretend to go along with him and kill him later.

Breaking Bad fun fact: Walt’s whistling has been identified as the song “Lily of the Valley” by Queen.

The same plant that he used to poison the kid. Nice touch.

Pretty good whistling, too. I never pictured Walt as a Queen fan. Although if you think about it - not that Jesse seems like a Queen lover either - that seems like a pretty dangerous thing to do. By the way that Breaking Bad wiki confirms that we have not seen Declan before.
