Breaking News: Mass Shooting at Madden Games Tournament in Jacksonville

I found an alternative source. Yes, the dot does appear. That’s Horrifying.

I was worried this was a conspiracy theory, like many others tossed around during these tragedies.

What?

Say what?

Apparently some people tracked down the shooter’s Reddit account

Every single part of this post is incorrect.

Why does the fact that the killer used a laser sight make this any more horrifying?

Because you later found out that you were witnessing that person’s last moments. It’s not so much that random death isn’t horrifying, because it is, but it’s that you knew from that video that he was dead seconds later and there was nothing you could do about it. It’s roughly analogous to an impending accident. You see it coming and you have that same feeling of helplessness even though it’s happening in hundreds of other places everywhere in the world at any given time.

What if violent people were attracted to playing video games? Nightshadea’s post would be correct and your cite would also be valid. I was also  at nightshadea’s post, but you need to come up with a better rebuttal than that.

I know that some kids get beaten up by thugs because they killed that thug’s character online. How that young a-hole managed to zero-in on that meek pre-teen boy inside that nameless computer shop I’ll never know. But I was there on one occasion and I wish I’d gotten that punk.

Sure. Anecdotally, I’m sure that some thugs have beat up some gamers for beating them at a game. It doesn’t prove nightshadea’s claims:

  1. “Video game people” as a group are seriously violent

  2. That “if the cops don’t get the guy the gamers will”

  3. “this tournament is one of the most holy things in gaming”
all of which statements are dripping with ignorance.

Redo number 1. He said “…can get violent…”

I don’t care about #2 and 3. But you’re far from disproving that gaming can induce violence. This generation seems to have forgotten “tv violence.” That was a hot one back in the '70s.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Everybody was too busy getting stoned and laid back in the '70’s to be bothered with violence.

Or, cite please?

So … just like everybody else on earth? Meaning that video game people, as a group, are no different than anyone else in their ability to get seriously violent?

I don’t have to disprove it. The people who want to argue that video games cause violence need to prove it. (Your anecdote about a random thug beating up a random gamer is useless as a cite, fyi).

No - what we remember about it is that it was stupid scaremongering from the people who brought us Reefer Madness and Satanic Panic.

That’s not the shooter’s account. That’s a lie that’s being spread by alt-right figures like Cernovich and Gateway Pundit to claim that the shooter was anti-Trump.

The guy behind that account, u/ravenchamps, is still alive and posting about how dumb this all is.
