I believe that the queen planned that Edward would be given his father’s dukedom after his death. I don’t know if that is still the plan.
Edward apparently asked to be Earl of Wessex because he liked a character in Shakespeare in Love. Go figure.
And as @rocking_chair said there was a plan to upgrade it to Duke of Edinburgh, which might happen now.
In his war memoirs, Churchill mentions that one of the obstacles to presidential international travel was the 10 day time limit for the president to sign bills, or to return it to Congress within 10 days if he vetoed it. I think he said there were some other statutory time limits. There had to be a way to get copies of bills to FDR for his review within the time limits. That meant daily travel arrangements for couriers to meetings in Europe and Tehran, if Congress was in session and passing bills.
Quick trips across the Atlantic weren’t a presidential thing back then.
Funeral on 19 sept., bank holiday that day
[aside]This is something I’ve wondered for years. The British term “bank holiday” isn’t specifically about banks, right? I’m thinking it’s equivalent to the American expression “federal holiday.” On federal holidays here, banks are closed, true, but so are government offices and lots of other things. It’s the word bank in “bank holiday” that always confused me.[/aside]
It is actually. The days that banks are closed, and some government offices.
The sovereign only has 2 days off where they are not doing the government’s business, Christmas and Easter. So technically no official government holidays.
Sorry to prolong this aside (but ignorance being fought)… to me “bank holiday” sounds like ONLY the banks are closed and everything else runs as usual. But bank holiday is the same thing as an American federal holiday, right?
Bugger, I’m in the US on business that day. No holiday for me. Unless the rebellious colonialists have a national day of celebration?
Same here. I’ll be at work on that day but would rather be at home watching everything.
Prince of wales invited his brother to do walk about with him and the princess of wales at Windsor. Nice to see the 4 of them together like the 3 siblings earlier at Scotland.
I am a bit disappointed that the queen will fly from Scotland rather than take the train.
Bank holidays started as just banks and financial institutions in the beginning then some government offices. Yes, equivalent to our federal holidays now.
That is my understanding, yes. There may be some distinctions, but the general idea (many businesses and government offices are closed) seems to be the same.
There would have been something rather romantic about using the royal train, especially as that would allow lots of people to line the route. But the logistics of closing both Waverley and King’s Cross on a weekday would be a nightmare.
If some of the coverage is to be believed, at least some of those erstwhile rebels will happily trade their current liege lords for Carolus tertius Rex
We do, but it occurs in July and you missed it for this year. You are welcome to come next year, though.

When I have 1:1 telecons with my USA colleagues and 4th July intervenes I always cancel them with the message
“Cancelled: colonial treason day”
::: kiss, kiss, hug :::
It’s alright, sweetie, we forgive you all for that business of burning down the Presidential Palace. The new, white paint job turned out to be quite popular!

will do, I’ll take the lengthy response time as assumed shall I?
Well this is hardly surprising; Catherine gets most of the jewelry, Meghan gets nothing. It’s a bit of a burn on Camilla too. Hope Princess Anne and the granddaughters are splitting the rest of the collection.
Eh, I’d take this with a grain of salt. A “sovereign to sovereign” transfer from Elizabeth to Charles is tax-free, but a bequest to the new Princess of Wales or other family would be subject to something like a 40% tax. The queen wasn’t foolish with her money.
She may well have left instructions that X,Y,Z are to be loaned to Catherine, however, and Charles probably would follow Mummy’s instructions to the letter.
Honestly, do you think Meghan was expecting to receive any of the jewels? I think it highly unlikely.
