Breaking - The Queen is unwell (has died): 8 Sep 2022

A whole set of pretty restrictive guidelines. President Biden may find he has to use a bus with all the other bigwigs:

Ha! Sure thing, POTUS will fly commercial, you got it.

It also says Heathrow will not be available for private flight arrangements or aircraft parking and says heads of state should use other London airports if they cannot fly commercially. It says the government will decline the use of helicopter transport because of the sheer volume of guests.

It would be even more disruptive if Biden and his security detail flew commercial. They will use some other London airport.

Though I remember at least once the queen herself flew commercial. (There was a fly-on-the-wall documentary called Airport, about the operations at Heathrow, and one episode featured the preparations for her to fly out on, I think, a Qantas flight.)

I wonder if there’s an airbase suitable for AF1 nearby.

Another article in The Guardian says, “When the US president travels to London, Air Force One tends to use Stansted airport, as it causes too much disruption at Heathrow, though for Biden’s visit last year it used RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk.”

Anyone know the significance of marmalade sandwiches? I just heard that Brits are leaving them everywhere.

This Paddington Bear & QEII video:

That’s really cute. Thanks!

Also, her private chef said fairly recently that she eats jam sandwiches daily and has done so since she was five years old.

I wasn’t familiar with Stadsted until this weekend while reading about the terribly avoidable crash of Korean Air Cargo flight 8509 in this extremely well written account:

the bees at the queen’s various residences have been informed of her passing and have black ribbons on the hives. they have been told that king charles in now in charge.

there are nearly 1 million bees at buckingham palace.

And I thought bees only had queens.

Cool! Sitting on my porch vaping with dogs and bird. There are bees flying around constantly. Our neighbors have bees and they periodically feed on the pastures around our house. Haven’t been stung a single time in the four years the hives (apiary?) has been in operation.

There was a Midsommer episode where the beekeeper said the bees need to be notified when their caretaker has died so they won’t leave. I had assumed it was just folk nonsense.

It’s a folk superstition, yes, but it’s also traditional.

A short video about the queen’s bees (or the queen’s queens, if you will)

Yes, but they make up so much b.s. on Midsommer that I wasn’t sure.

I think I learned about it from Ursula Vernon, who has all sorts of weird (but true as in people did/do believe them) folklore in her stories.

That is so British and so charming. We don’t keep bees (suburban home unsuitably for a full hive), but have multiple pollinator residences on the property - as well as plants for them to feed on.
