We have used WISDOM PANEL DNA identification on our dogs. It’s fun, there are medical applications, and they now can show you dogs related to yours. I’ve guessed correctly on the primary breed with Loki and Kizzy, but I have no clue what we will see with Simi.
Loki
34% German Shepherd Dog
23% American Pit Bull Terrier
11% Boxer
7% Cocker Spaniel
4% Rottweiler
Kizzy
35% German Shepherd Dog
28 % Great Pyrenees (a Great Pyrenees aficionado guessed this based on her eyes)
10% Siberian Husky
8% Akita
5% Norwegian Elkhound
Simi
Simi should be interesting. He comes from St Martin, where he and his litter-mates were abandoned. Mixed breed dogs on small islands tend to all look very similar. Anyone have a guess as to what breed will be number one here?
ETA: Officially the rescue organization has Simi down as a Coconut Retriever.
Based on the brindle coloration, chest blaze, whippy tail and set of ears and eyes I’m guessing there’s some pit in there although likely not the primary. Probably actually has some Lab in there and possibly some cattle dog or Aussie shepherd to explain the freckles. Concur with assessment of Very Good Doggo who heckin’ needs a scritch on them oversized ears!
Well, the results are in and they are as whacky as I expected. They detected 22 different breeds! That’s huge, which I guess can be explained by the small island effect. For comparison, Kizzy had 11 breeds and Loki had 15.
All the health parameters were good. They were able to describe some general characteristics, like short coat, minimal shedding, dominant black, points, brown eyes, upright ears, an average to long snout.
Now here is where things get interesting. Simi has a “relative” that shares a some DNA! But that’s not all. Simi’s (distant) relative has some biographical information her owner shared and she comes from the same shelter on the same island via the same person!!
A friend in St Martin has a little stand where he sells coconut drinks. He uses a machete to trim away the top, adding a shot of liquor if you want.
Cool way to make a living. Near zero overhead (he collects the coconuts himself and the liquor is cheap well stuff). He charges €5 a pop and gets tips on top of that.
