Non-American here, I suspect there’s a jargong in this I’m missing. From nfl.com:

Fans booed Favre loudly – first when he walked out of the tunnel for pregame warmups, then again when he ran out of the tunnel for the game, and on every snap during the Vikings’ first few offensive possessions.

“Welcome back to Lambeau Field, Brent,” one fan’s sign read.

Since the guy’s name is Brett, one suspect that there’s a joke here. If so, could you disclose it?

It’s a muffed ripoff of a T-shirt being sold in GB that says “We’ll never forget you, Brent.” Meaning, “we actually are already forgetting about you, and in fact you mean so little to us we can’t bother to get your name right.”

Just a guess but it might be a sarcastic reference to the way he pronounces his surname. Farve as opposed to Favre. Maybe Brett and Brent are as interchangeable in a sarcastic world?
