Favre tells Vikings he's not coming back

Brett Favre has reportedly told the Vikings that he’s actually going to retire this time. He says his ankle hasn’t responded to surgery. An official announcement from Favre and a press conference from Brad Childress are expected later in the day.

I know it’s Favre, and it doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t change his mind again, but I don’t think he’d play this game this close to the start of the season. It’s not like he needed the excuse to skip training camp. The team was perfectly willing to let him skip training camp already. I think the ankle just really hasn’t come back, and he doesn’t want to play if he can’t run.

Looks like we’re going to be back to watching Tavaris Jackson sail balls ten feet over Sidney Rice’s head. :frowning:

If Favre told me the sky was blue and bacon tasted good I wouldn’t believe him. I’ll wait.

Yeah.

Well, except for the bacon thing.

mmm

But you do have Sage Rosenfels, who you have to admit looks really good out there. When he’s on the sidelines holding a clipboard.

Sage Rosenfels, baby! It looked like he was going to be the starter last year until Favre showed up. Represent Iowa State!

I don’t see what the love is for TJack amongst the Viking coaching staff. I don’t think there’s a lot of love amongst the fans.

This brings the draft back in focus for me. My son and I were watching the first round, seeing Jimmy Claussen drop and drop with the Vikes’ pick coming up, thinking the chance to grab a QB below his apparent pre-draft value would be a really good idea – JUST for this eventuality. Heck, even if Favre did come back this year, it’d almost certainly only be for one season, which would be a pretty good learning opportunity for a rookie quarterback.

Instead, we have Toby Gearhart (who I do believe is a GREAT fit for the Vikings style) … but TJack/Rosenfels/some UAB rookie taking snaps. Oh, well.

Take it with a Great Salt Lake of salt.

Maybe Joe Webb will emerge. Hey, Tom Brady came out of nowhere as a 6th round draft pick. It could happen, right? Right?

Could Favre come back in a few months, after the ankle has healed? When is the Vikes bye week?

Think anyone from the press will show up?

ESPN is at Code Red

Can’t get Dio’s link in the OP to work, but here’s another one to CNN/SI

Allegedly, his ankle hasn’t recovered sufficiently from surgery.

So, the question is: assuming that this report is accurate – do you believe this is his final decision?

Personally, I’ll only be convinced if it’s November, and he still hasn’t suited up for the Vikings. He’s that damned indecisive, and that willing to let how he feels today color his decisions. What if his ankle feels better in a month?

Edit: Oops, didn’t see the earlier thread. Will ask a moderator to merge or delete this one.

I’m waiting for the day when instead of “MLB/NFL/NHL/NBA” the ESPN ticker just reads something like “LeBron/Farve/A-Rod/Kobe”. ESPN’s been turning into fucking People Magazine over the last year.

Oh Lord. Please let it be true…its time for the “gunslinger” to gracefully fade from our collective consciousnesses and from ESPN headlines. Enough I say, enough!

I think they should have a one-hour special, just for the announcement.

and it is going to be hosted by lebron james.

He must be upset that the media have been paying him relatively little attention so he’s putting this out there to stir up drama and get his name in the media again.

I’m also certain that a fresh set of Wrangler commercials designed to portray Brett as the everyman, backyard football gunslinger are already in production to soothe his ego.

After days of hype and lead up to the show, Favre tells host, LeBron James:

“I have definitely decided that I might not reconsider unretiring, probably.”

“Um, this is hard. I’ve decided to take my talents to South Beach and join the National Shuffleboard League.”

He really might have a bad ankle, you know. He’s had three surgeries on it, he’s 40 years old and his body has got to be beat to hell. That’s the crazy thing. He’s cried wolf so many times, nobody will believe him even if he’s telling the truth, but it’s not actually implausible that his ankle just isn’t coming back after surgery this time.
