I actually have no doubts that he has a bad ankle, and that it hurts like hell, and that he can’t play on it. At this point in time.
The question, for me, is: what happens in a month, or two months, if his ankle improves? We don’t know if it’s something that’s just been slow to heal from the surgery, or if it’s more of a degenerative condition, that is simply not going to get any better than it is now.
If it’s the latter, then the announcement makes sense. But, given everything that’s come out of Favreville before today, if it is a degenerative condition, that’s a big surprise.
If it’s the former, then why didn’t he just have the Vikings put him on the PUP list, or find some way that he could keep rehabbing it, rather than throw in the towel now?
Oh, I know. I’m just joking around. If I were a Vikings fan I’d be pretty concerned about returning to the playoffs next season without him, because the other QB’s the Vikes have are, ah, mediocre.
I was trying to be charitable! Its the offseason, so I don’t really hate any of the other teams yet. Well, except the Steelers, Ravens and Browns, in that order.
Farve gets more grief than he deserves. Yeah, he’s not real good at making permanent decisions that stick. He’s also a no doubt HoF player, probably on his first ballot, and a decent human being. If he’s played his last game, then he had a helluva run. If he’s still got more in the tank, I’d like to see it.
Smart move for Buckhead Brett… Julius Peppers and Urlacher were going to commensce to whip his ass this year… instead we can look forward to making AP fumble three or four times…
More and More lookin like The Beloved will take the Central?North… what ever they call it now!!!
It’s funny to read things from Packers fans talking up the chances of a team that gave up 50+ points in the Wild Card loss, and has since had one of its better defensive players get suspended for the season. At least d-coordinators around the league haven’t had a chance to figure out anything about Aaron Rodgers, right?
A week or so ago our local sports-talk radio station started a contest to pick what day Favre will show up at a team practice. I picked 8/23. I still stand by that pick.
I think his plan is to retire and then sign a big contract with Chicago to continue the “Rub his Ass in the Packers Fans Faces by Playing for Hated Rivals Tour”
Now there are reports that Favre’s brother is saying Favre hasn’t actually made a decision after all. Chilly said in his press conference earlier that the situation is “fluid” and that Brett hasn’t told him he was retiring.
So, does this mean that Favre had been planning to play for the Vikings this season? If he wasn’t, why wait til now to announce it; if he was, was there any commitment to the Vikings management and is he in any sort of breach of contract if he arbitrarily changes his mind?
I think his deal is basically, he can play if he wants, and if he does, he gets paid. Otherwise, he doesn’t get paid.
I also heard the “well, maybe he will play after all” thing on local sports radio this afternoon. As a betting man, I think I’d…bet on something else. He’s either gonna play or he won’t, and damned if I know either way.
I’ll believe it when Week 1 comes and he’s not suiting up. Until then, it’s the usual dramafest. I would not be shocked if Wilf and Childress (aka Brett’s bitch) fly down to Hattiesberg, throw more money at Brett and gives Brett’s ego a nice massage with a happy ending and he decides to play after all.
Personally, I think he should come back to raise the hopes and dreams of Vikings fans once again, only to throw two stupid interceptions and have a fumble in a big game to help cost them a chance at the Super Bowl. I was actually worried last year that he’d actually developed beyond that, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it happen yet again. To the Vikings that is.
Which screams to me, “there ain’t no way you are getting me to training camp, no way, no how. Hell, I may not even show up until after the bye week and there isn’t anything you can do because my backup is Tavaris Jackson.”
