Cervaise, this is against the forum rules, which explicitly state not to wish death on other posters. Disagree with and/or mock an OP all you want, but let’s not lose perspective.
Whoa! Aren’t you painting with a bit of a BROAD BRUSH there? Surely not ALL lefties think that way!
No, but many of them are. Look at the language the right uses to malign the left: “do-gooders”, “bleeding hearts”, “tree-huggers”, etc. We’re all soft-hearted ninnies and you’re tough-minded strong men, or so the standard right-wing narrative goes.
The thing is, there’s a thin line between tough and callous. As a movement, American conservatism has turned mean-spirited and callous. The weak are not to be pitied or helped, they are to be laughed at and scorned.
George W. Bush, when he was Governor of Texas, mocked a death-row inmate’s plea before sending her to her death. That’s some cold-hearted shit right there. Sure, if she’s guilty, see that justice is done. But don’t laugh about it.
As you might imagine, I have a rebuttal to all that but I have to leave right now. I’ll try to get back to it later this evening.
Er, if you’re suggesting that one side may be characterised by the insults of the other, wouldn’t that tend to mean that likewise many liberals are bleeding heart tree-hugging do-gooders?
I mean, i’d agree, but that doesn’t seem to be what you’re saying.
It is. Note that above I say that the “bride of peace” was suffering from too much liberal idealism.
Yeah, the only other thing that’s distressing about this pointless “point and laugh at the stupid dead girl” thread is that somehow because someone identifies himself (or is known to be) conservative, that some of the rest of you that for some reason hate people that say so, pile on this guy and start making broad generalizations about any other people that might have truly conservative values, yet actually (gasp!) respect human life.
Neocon and conservative are not the same thing, and this current admin is NOT conservative, and I resent the fact that I, having conservative leanings in some areas get lumped in with fuckstick here.
+1
Ah, fair play then, and sorry to have misinterpreted you.
I came back to this thread out of curiosity. I’d been willing, just barely, to think that Loathsome Polecat, in the OP, and with one reply, had maybe been drunk/depressed/whatever, and had spouted off without thinking. He was absent from the thread, so maybe was sleeping it off, or had slunk away in shame, hoping to live it down.
But then Lonesome Weasel came back, presumably sober, and actually defended his position, seemed proud of it.
Yep, he’s an idiot, as bad as he’d seemed in the OP. I’ve got to learn to trust my instincts in these things.
You know, I’ve met people with vast souls and meagre intelligence, and people with meagre souls and vast intellect. The latter are less likely to be boring. But that’s pretty much all they’re good for. As for hard-headed and practical realists, remind me next time I get to a church, I’ll be sure to thank Whomsoever for keeping us abundantly supplied with hard headed realists. Oh, yeah. Thanks a bunch.
I’m curious, and I’m sure I’ll regret it, but why?
Gotta say I’ve always found the OP one of the stranger characters around here. Most of his contributions (that I’ve seen at least) seem to be sneers and thinly veiled insults in GD and the Pit, without much in the way of content. He seems geniunely threatened by ‘liberalism’, however he defines it (nor sure what his definition is, really), but I haven’t seen much in the way of explanation as to what he feels the threat is. Given the degree of hostility he’s routinely displayed toward that subject, therefore, this thread does not come as a total surprise, even if it seems to serve no purpose except to allow him to express his hatred of some (most?) of the members of this board.
But really. Going out of his way to gloat on an Internet message board over the death (by a common thief, apparently), of someone who he probably never heard of before he read the linked article, that surely had not the slightest impact one way or another on his life, and who may or may not had a political outlook of the sort he despises so much? That’s a sign, seems to me, that someone doesn’t have much of anything constructive to do with one’s life. This kind of thing is shameful, and the OP should be embarrassed to have been responsible for it.
.
In all honesty, I can see what the OP (in light of his subsequent explanations) is saying, but that takes nothing away from the maniacal and vitriolic glee that was expressed by the unfortunate (if stupid) death of this woman in the OP’s original post.
Drunk or sober, laughing about something like this is the height of assholish narcissim, and I’m a cynic.
I agree that she was naive and possibly stupid, I believe that she kinda deserved what happened despite her “western” travels as a hitchiker…
But to openly laugh and condemn a fellow human’s demise lke that…I can’t get on board there.
By all means.
Really? I’m “political point scoring”? You find my observations about his comments on the stupidity and naivete of progressives to be almost as offensive as his OP?
Then your evaluation of what is right and wrong is completely fucked up, and I invite you to go fuck yourself in the hopes that you set it all right again.
Of course I know conservatives that wouldn’t wish harm on others. I also know many who would, and many who write stupid shit like this on the internet. I know many who call other people cowards and Saddamites and faggots because of their political views. This piece of shit is happy that a “progressive” got killed because of her “stupidity.” Don’t like it? Then put an end to it by cleaning up your party, so that Karl Rove doesn’t have to come up with bullshit slogans about how compassionate conservatives are.
Of course, you won’t because you’re as troubled by my “political point scoring” as you are of his gloating over the murder of a woman.
Experiencing and displaying joy at the rape and murder of a stranger by a criminal is sociopathic. Most conservatives are not sociopaths, IMHO, to put it mildly.
[hijack]With few exceptions, the administration’s policies, the ones with demonstrably bad consequences, have been cheered on by conservatives every step of the way.
Substantiation: During the runup to the Iraq war, talk radio directed most of its anathema at war skeptics, especially the French. Indeed, they seemed to enjoy making fun of this US ally who actually will on occasion back up their words with military action. Appalling (but obviously in a different league – no a different galaxy – than the OP, thus the hijack).
During Katrina, Republican approval of Bush topped 80%.
80%!
Either they didn’t care about the disaster or they couldn’t comprehend that packing a department with unqualified cronies would severely compromise its operational effectiveness. Either way, Republicans should look back with shame.*
Sorry. Judging from the modern conservative responses to GWBushism, this administration is conservative as conservative can be. [/hijack]
- …or at a minimum profound embarrassment. I for one am comfortable using a broad brush, when the characterization applies to over 2/3 of a population.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
If you are one of the truly caring conservatives taking action to make this a better world for others, he’s not attacking you. But I don’t think that people believe that about conservatives in general anymore. So many seem to be in it for all that they can get and screw the other guy. Or at least they are the ones making the news and the commentary.
Stage Manager: The monsters are due on Maple Street and I’m in the damndest new play…
Are you shitting me? Do women who wear short skirts “deserve” to be raped? Do people who leave their doors unlocked “deserve” to be robbed? Do soldiers who are doing their jobs “deserve” to die? While all of the above might have increased their risk factors by making certain decisions, they don’t “deserve” the listed fates.
This woman “deserved” nothing of the sort.
If you want to “avoid getting lumped in with this fuckstick”, stop proving that you belong there.
Let me just join in Lonesome, on what I’m sure is going to be the biggest and most deserved ass-kicking this board has delivered to a poster. You just take my breath away with your attitude.
Seek professional help and stay out of any threads where you feel the urge to berate Der T for his attitude to the soldiers occupying Iraq.
Maybe “deserve” wasn’t the right word choice. I simply meant that she really put herself in a position for this to happen, making it less than surprising when it did. Deserve? No.
Sorry. Must not have been thinking clearly.
