Brit Dopers: Anyone Catch/Going to Catch "His Dark Materials"?

I was reading the Telegraph today, which has an interesting commentary on the effects of both The Lord of the Rings and His Dark Materials. I guess this could be a discussion in and of itself, but it’s not my question. The article mentions a National Theatre production by Nicholas Hytner. A little googling got me the theatre’s website and cast listing. It sounds interesting, though theatre isn’t really my thing (and six hours for both parts?) It’s not like I’m ever going to see it, unless it proves such a hit to make it across the Atlantic and even then I’d probably have to go all the way to New York to ever see it, which isn’t likely whenever I actually am home and not at school.

So, what it all comes down to, if you can get to it, will you, and if you do or if you have seen it, what’s it like?

And, as long as we’re talking about productions, any word on the potential movie? It’s hard to sift good information out of fan sites and zines.

Oh, and if the theatre’s website is any indication, the series seems more popular in Britain (or the BBC has too much time on their hands making a radio dramatization. How is that, by the way?) Is that even close to right?
