British Dopers: Anyone Know the Old Roebuck Pub in Altrincham

I plan to go to the Old Roebuck in Altrincham next month and have a couple of questions.

Does it allow children during the day? And what time does it start serving food at lunchtime?

Their number is 0161 928 2755. Call them and ask them your questions. BTW, I found a four month old review of the bar. According to its author the pub decor resembles a “gay brothel” and the food is described as “passable to good but not cheap”: qype.co.uk. The posters on this site give the pub more positive reviews: viewmanchester.co.uk.

So what day/time do you intend getting there?

I live about 1 mile from the Roebuck, you could buy me a nice refreshing cup of herbal tea

Chowder, my family would like to sit down to eat around 12 noon. Do you know if it serves food from midday or thereabouts? And can children (mine are 11 and 9) eat indoors (tables in the bar/family room)?

Food is served from 11:30 onwards (at least it was when I was last in the place) and kids are allowed in but must not go anywhere near the bar itself.

I don’t know what the food (quality wise) is like but if you decide not to eat at The Roebuck I can recommend the following:

The Hare and Hounds…excellent carvery at £3.99 midweek
The Quarrybank… selection of lunches to suit all.

Kids meals are usually less than the price for adults.

Any further info you need, let me know

Thanks, Chowder. Which of the two you name is more country pubbish? We’re coming from Singapore and the kids have heard a lot about such establishments.

I would venture to say the Hare and Hounds is more countryfied but not actually in the countryside.

It’s located on Wood Lane which is about 1 mile from the Roebuck

The Quarrybank is also about 1 mile from the 'Buck and is located on Bloomsbury lane.

Both places are well within striking distance of the Roebuck, both pubs are in Timperley and I could say the Quarry is in Timperley village itself.

If you want a real country pub you’ll be better off driving out to Alderley Edge, you may even get to see some of the footballers that live in that area…it’s very posh and also very bloody expensive, a cup of coffee will set you back about £2.50 or maybe more

I should have mentioned that the carvery at the H&H is £3.99 pp Monday to Sat.

On Sunday it increases to £5.99 pp.

As a more personal observation, I’ve always found that the waitresses at the Quarrybank are much more pleasant than those at the H&H

The carvery at the H&H it is!

Enjoy your meal but don’t expect the kids prices at the H&H to be reduced.

Mind you at £3.99 it’s affordable.

Incidentally, if you fancy a round of golf the golf club is just a matter of yards from the H&H and Altrincham FC is about ½ mile away.

You could always take a look around Alty market on a Saturday, pop in for a coffee at Neros or even Starbucks which is located in Sainsbury’s supermarket.

There’s a cinema in Alty centre and a drive out to Dunham Park is well worth it.
There are wild deer, the kids will love 'em, they feed from your hand and so do the ducks, geese and swans.

DO NOT be tempted into eating at the Dunham Restaurant unless you’re made of money
