British Dopers: "Can I have a P please Bob?" - Was it ever funny?

I’m not sure how many of you saw Blockbusters on ITV, but one thing always associated with the show was “Can I have a P please Bob?”
I always thought it was like saying “Can I have a pee please Bob?”, but I didn’t think it was particularly funny.
Did you ever laugh out loud when someone said it?

Second only in the chuckle stakes to “Can I have an E please Bob”.

Didn’t find it funny, even as a student.

BTW one of the following facts is true:

  1. Bob Holness of blockbusters fame played saxophone on Gerry rafferty’s classic “Baker Street”.

  2. Bob Holness of blockbusters fame was the original James Bond.

Found it mildly amusing the very first time I heard it but that was it. Didn’t make me laugh out loud.

Funny once. Never again.

Clawman, both are true.

He played James Bond on a radio programme.

… I’m afraid I did find it funny. Repeatedly. And I still do. But I also found funny the joke where little Timmy desperately needs the loo, and asks teacher if he can go…

“Only when you’ve said the alphabet”, says the teacher.

“A, B, C…” says Timmy, all the way through, but misses out the letter between O and Q.

“Very good, Timmy, but where’s the ‘P’?” asks the teacher

“Halfway down my trouser leg, miss”

As an impressionable teenager who watched and re-watched the Woodstock movie, my favourite was “can I have a J please Bob”. Groovy.

Utter confusion on this side of the pond. What was the joke, for the benefit of us yanks?

It isn’t “Can I have a P”…it’s “I’ll take a P, Bob.” Infinitely funnier.

Blockbusters explained.

It was one of those “jokes” that were compulsory without being funny. Blockbusters itself was a cheesy, nerdy, daggy sort of a show to be on, but hey, you got prizes.

Y’see, I knew that he played James Bond on radio…

…but I’ve heard conflicting things about the Baker Street fact. Some say it is true - others that it is pure myth.

In fact, I think we’ve discussed it at the Straight Dope before, too.

Well, I did a search and couldn’t find anything…perhaps we didn’t discuss it here, after all.

The sax player was a chap called Raphael Ravenscroft.

I believe the myth was made up by Victor Lewis-Smith, but I don’t know where I got that factoid from.

I just realized that you were talking about a completely different program. I was referring to Wheel of Fortune in the US. They play Hang the Butcher for cash and prizes. You have to pick a letter that you think appears in the phrase, hence…I’ll Take A “P”. It still cracks me up.

No, not ever.

Marginally less unfunny was the Russ Abbot development of the theme :

Contestant : Can I have a “P” please Bob?

[there isn’t one on the board]

Bob : No, you can’t. There’s a “Q”.

Contestant : Oh, I’ll wait then.

Yes. I’m still sniggering now after reading your thread title.

It wasn’t just the “pee” per se, it was the whole ethos of the show - with the contestants all being students IIRC and Bob Holness as a result filling a sort of headteacher role.

And as mentioned above, the whole thing was really cheesy and nerdy, and somehow that made the “pee” thing even more hilarous.

FUNNIEST JOKE EVAH!

When I was 7. Along with the joke pierre72 posted.

I wish I could still find these things as funny as I used to.
nostalgic sigh

So, did a contestant ever miss the point and say “I have to piss, Bob”?
