Scoff not, o ye of little faith: I know humidity, having lived in Hong Kong and Houston, TX for 6 years total… But both these places have air conditioning everywhere. Dublin, and especially my stuffy feckin house, is singularly ill-equipped to handle it.
OK, we might not be having the highs of heat that you would normally have in other parts of the world, but we’re not used to it, and it is very annoying, especially when your in an office with no air conditioning.
No, we have no idea what the heat and humidity other people put up with all the time. thats because we’re not other people. We aren’t used to this, so allow us a moment to winge, before it all goes back to the normal pissy weater of Ireland.
Now excuse me while I try to rig up evaporating ice cubes to a desk fan.
I used to work for a cheap company that would turn off the a/c at 7pm. I worked on the 18th floor. That sucked for the couple of hours I was there for. There’s a HUGE difference between it being hot outside, and going to a theme park, or the state fair compared to working all day sweating non-stop because of no a/c hardly anywhere. England probably stinks like unwashed football socks. Yuck!
My condolences.
I used to work in a factory that would get really hot. Here’s a tip: Take a hankerchief and get it damp. Put it in the freezer until frozen. Then tie it around your neck.
I wrote it as rank hyperbole, but now I come to think of it, the roads and traintracks are that shoddy over here…
Francesca: You tell 'em…
Astro: I don’t think you understand the seriousness of the situation over here…
BTW… -500° Fahrenheit (-295° C)
Hell freezes over.

Broomstick:* ‘go easy on anything with … alcohol…’*
I can’t believe you said that… AngelicGemma: It’s grim oop North…
Are there any Icelandics on this board?
Well, then I sympathize with the Dopers on the other side of the ocean. At least here, anyone with an IQ over 50 knows to make sure the air conditioning has been serviced in May so that you can make through the dog days of summer. It must be awful to work in a stuffy, stinky office with no relief in sight. Does this mean that you wimpy furriners (just kidding) will start installing central air conditioners and start burning up fuel oil on a par with the U.S.?
Yeah, I said that. Yes, alcohol makes you sweat and that cools you down… but it also pulls the water out of you, which makes you more suspetible to both heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
So… yeah, have a beer or whatever at the end of the day, when things are starting to cool down and you won’t be exerting yourself. BUT - when you’re working, in the real heat of the day, you need WATER. Sports drinks. Fluids that will stay with you.
Here’s some another tip:
Take fruit - grapes work well, as do various melons - that’s really watery and juicey. Cut into bite size pieces (well, not the grapes, they’re already bite-size) and freeze. Take them with you - frozen, they’ll stay cold - and suck/chew on them. Cools you down, replaces your fluids, and relieves the tedium of plain water.
Actually, for a REALLY hot day a magarita is grand, one with the salty rim on the glass… mmmmm.
But in really hot weather, if you aren’t hydrated enough and then overdo the alcohol you will get a real nasty hangover. I mean nastier than usual.
Well, its intolerable in our office. We have no a/c and the windows are sealed shut. Its like working in a sauna… Hence shorts and t-shirts all round - I’m so glad we don’t have to adhere to “normal” standards of office wear.
We don’t install A/C because it gives us something to complain about! We do seem to enjoy a good moan about the weather. Summer’s too hot for 8 weeks then Winter’s too cold for the 2 days of snow we get.
Ah, wish I was back in Cornwall with the nice sea breezes…
Why are you Brits complaining? At least, you can now go to the beach! Its not like you have to spend big bucks to go the spain or some other warm place. Look at the bright side-pretty soon you will have palm trees in London!
It may be only a small island, but it’s not that small, you know. There are no beaches within walking distance in Oxfordshire, that’s for certain.
And we have palm trees in Torquay already, we don’t need them in London too. Stamp out the insidious spread of palm trees! Coming over here, nicking our jobs and touching up our women … I wouldn’t turn my back on a palm tree, no, not for a minute, matey. Can’t trust them an inch.
Yes, as it happens, I am going a bit peculiar in the unaccustomed heat, why do you ask?
That was pretty funny, and reminded me of my nephew who came to Iowa from Florida and spent a year with us.
I would have sworn in December he was dressing like he was taking a trip to the tundra.
One night he went with me to take the babysitter home and my van broke down.
Here I was all dressed up from the christmas/birthday party in a dress and open toed heels, no coat and he was dressed in three layers of clothing and winter gear.
I couldn’t get him to get out of the van to finish the walk home. Only like three blocks. He was stunned and mortified at the thought of getting out of shelter to walk. I laughed my ass off.
Good thing we had passed a friend and he noticed my lights were dim and turned around and followed us (unknown to me until he tapped on my window) to make sure we got home safe.
I grill until the snow is too deep and pull the grill back out as soon as I can. Shorts and no shoes in January is a norm.
Our summer was mild this year. I don’t think we have gone over 100 so far. But, school starts in the next week and that is when we really get it.
I got an e-mail once about how you know you’re in Iowa and one of them is “if you go from running your a/c to running your heat in the same day” and another was school being canceled for extreme heat/cold.
To the dopers who are getting all this heat and aren’t used to it you have my sympathys.
Stay cool, and follow Broomsticks advice. Heat stroke is nothing to mess with. Please be safe.
I’ve got a warning for all the european and british dopers that we are reminded of regularly: don’t leave children and pets in a car with closed windows on a hot day. Even if the window is cracked open, heat can build up rapidly. Here in the U.S., we always hear on the news several cases of children and pets dying of heat exposure. Even if you think “I’ll only be a minute”, things happen a tragedy could occur.
We have had a very pleasant summer here in St Louis, MO. I turned my a/c off Saturday morning. I had to turn it back on today, but the heat this summer has been nothing to complain of.
I hate to say it – well, not really – but it’s a beautiful, sunny, not-humid-at-all, 80 degrees here just a bit north o’ Seattle. Picture the perfect weather for a day at the beach. It’s like that.
