Might tune in again, there were a few laugh out loud parts (“That is the fattest baseball player I’ve ever seen! Oh, and here’s the second fattest!”) and Amanda Peet is not objectionable to look at, but I can see this going south fast, too.
I enjoyed it. It took a little getting used to Azaria speaking in “announcer” voice all the time, but I guess that’s just part of his character.
They’d been hyping this show so much, and I like both Azaria and Peet, so I had to check it out. It was a bit more “harsh” in some respects than I was expecting, but I was okay with that (still not to “Shameless” levels). I think Peet’s character could have more to it.
I will definitely stick with it to see where it goes.
I thought the first episode was hilarious. I hope the rest of the show lives up, because of course it could be bad, but it could also be great. Hank Azaria is always funny, and it’s baseball season. What’s not to love?
Loved it. Lots of witty, smart ass lines. I had to zip back and listen again to several. Had a baseball expression I’d never heard before, and I though I’d heard them all. Guy hits a home run and Brockmeyer says,
"That ball will never be buried in a Jewish cemetery because it just got tattooed.
Got caught up on the first back to back episodes. Laugh out loud funny moments, but yeah, that’s Azaria riffing on saying everything in announcer voice, or coming up with a new silly announcer phrase. But those are very funny and I crush on Amanda Peet, so I will keep watching.
It will be interesting to see how they put this funny-but-one-note-ish character on some path of redemption. How far do we want that character redeemed and how well could HA sell it?
Liked the 3rd episode. The young black kid seems to be holding his own with Azaria and a bunch of other scenery chewing fun caricatures - hard for the actor to do.
So far, the ping pong between Brockmire’s depravity flashbacks and attempts at redemption work. But I don’t want him too civilized, dammit.
Have I mentioned that I crush on Amanda Peet?
The silliness and consistent access to the sublime Mrs. Benioff make this a nice diversion.
It was really funny for most of it. The scene in the bar dragged a bit.
Even Mrs. FtG enjoyed it. I think because she watches a lot of baseball and so the announcer shtick really hits the spot.
I’m not a fan of the “Drunks are funny!” idea, but it’s made clear that the drinking isn’t the only issue that creates the humor but a lot of other background stuff.
It was obvious the spot where Brockmire stands when he gets into town the first time is in middle Georgia. Surprised to have it set in Pennsylvania. But to filmmakers nowadays Georgia can fill in for anything.
We’ll continue to watch in our usual DVR-delayed way.
I’m still watching, but its going downhill, fast. The pregnancy/abortion episode was pretty terrible. The sportscaster event was kinda funny, more opportunity for straight jokes.
