Brokeback Mountain on Ice

Based on the title of the thread, I thought we’d be discussing the 2-man luge.
As to the number of gay men in figure skating, I’d have assumed the percentage was very high, as it is for, say, Broadway chorus line dancers. But if Rudy Galindo (one of the few proudly, publicly gay figure skaters) is to be believed, there aren’t that many at all.

Dang you beat me to it - but thanks to lissener for the link as I’ve been wondering what the chances would be of ever seeing a repeat.

Exactly. It doesn’t matter if the show was originally “Brokeback on Ice” or not. lissener offered the clip for it’s entertainment value and the title was catchy. Why anyone would want to pick nits and argue over the thread title is beyond me. Why anyone would want to go and and completely out of the blue assert the straightness of the men in the clip is also beyond me and smacks of a homophobic attitude, as if somehow if anyone thought any of these skaters are gay it would somehow be BAD.

Why the normally reasonable Gorsnak would then come along to pick up the gauntlet of an idiotic hijack is absurd. It wasn’t a discussion. lissener offered no “conclusion” to discuss. There was no assertion concerning the sexuality of the dancers or the original venue of the show in the OP to question or debate. It was simply a post to share an amusing, and quite homoerotic, while at the same time G-rated, video clip.

It’s obvious that lissener confused posters; but someone offered marriages as proof that these guys were straight, despite their sexuality never being mentioned. lissener made a simple comment that marriage is no proof of sexuality. I can personally attest to that fact. To go on and then threaten to pit him over his response is unreasonable in the extreme.

We’re here to appreciate the drool-worthiness of the dancers, admire the routine, mock the host in the segment or if you will, critique the performance. Otherwise you’re out of bounds nit-picking the title or hijacking about the sexuality of the skaters.

Lissener titled the thread “Brokeback Mountain on Ice” and then hinted on the fact that the female skater didn’t get the performance. It seems to me that it’s perfectly within reason for someone to come in and give a little insight to the clip…which, from what I gather, was done before the Brokeback Mountain phenomenon. And then it was mentioned that several of the skaters are married and have children.

This is a community forum. You don’t own the thread and I think anyone can post differing opinions about the clip or the topic. I’m not a mod, but I don’t think anything Mallory or Gorsnak wrote goes against the board rules. Especially the “don’t be a jerk!” rule. Can you say the same?

It was probably tongue-in-cheek. The clip is undeniably homoerotic.

Stating the original source of the clip is fine; but the editorializing that came with it was unnecessary. Gorsnak’s comment “Don’t you get pitted enough without asking for more?” is indeed jerkish. I’m not saying it’s an actionable offense calling for mod action. But it did need calling out.

Can I say that mine isn’t jerkish? Yes. You’re free to disagree. You’re also free to take it to the Pit if you feel it necessary.

My comment about lissener being pitted was in direct response to his more or less asking me to pit him. I didn’t intend my initial post as anything beyond polite disagreement, and was rather taken aback when he went off on me as if I’d attacked him - though rereading it now I do see how it could seem a bit snarky, and to the extent that it was I apologize. But I was and still am genuinely puzzled by his calling Jamie Sale “obliviously unclear” in the OP. It seems markedly unfair to her, so far as I can see, and so I questioned it.

Based on the reaction to it, I’d say the clip is both (male)homoerotic and (female)heteroerotic (plus just plain adorable if you happen to be a lesbian).

That’s funny. I was watching it thinking, “It’s true. You can make anything look totally gay just by strapping some iceskates to it.”

Still a fun clip, though.
