Bronze medal Athlete fidgets and fusses during national anthem

I get that, but I’m not so sure it’s not counterproductive if your issues aren’t actually issues, or you are staking claims like “it’s obvious” what that verse is about, when it’s not at all obvious and actually a quite debated thing.

When protesters (of any kind) do that sort of thing, it comes across to me as much more of a cry for attention than an actual legitimate protest (if it was legitimate, they’d have their facts straight, don’t you suppose?) and that turns me off. I’m sure I’m not alone in that either.

Again, the people most triggered in this thread aren’t triggered because she felt she was set up or even due to the reasons that she’s protesting. It’s that she protested at all. She should stand there like a good little girl and put on a big smile for the flag-wavers.

If it turns out tomorrow that we have e-mail confirmation that she was indeed set up and if she gives an interview this evening where she discusses the uncertainty behind the meaning of the third verse, you won’t have chela, dalej42, and their defenders suddenly start supporting her protests.

No. For example this thread makes me dislike you quite a bit.

The people that are upset about this or Kaepernick would be buying all the merch of someone that protested the “stolen election” during the anthem. We all know what this is about.

Nope, voted Biden and Hillary and was quite vocal about it.

Note the anger at the man protesting by taking the same pose as a Knight swearing fealty to the King.

If you don’t understand systemic racism just say so. Or if you don’t understand human empathy. You understand what protest is? Or do you ever look outside your own narrow view?

Has anyone said they believed this to be the case? All I see are people acknowledging the possibility that some asshole decided to fuck with her. Is this farfetched?

“Black people should only protest when it’s convenient to me” remains a popular dance, I guess.

You’re fine with my idea?

So, if one of the medal winners pulls out a Confederate flags and waives it in front of our little activist like they’re a toreador, you’d approve?

Isn’t that literally what protest is?

For instance in the Civil Rights Movement, the leaders deliberately chose the activity that would get the most attention. Dr. King would get disappointed if they marched in a town and the sheriff was either moderate or smart enough not to stop them. Because violent reprisals would get them the attention needed to change things.

It is both sad and freaking hilarious that you think this is a “gotcha” question.

Not to mention it’s been answered twice.

You need to pay better attention in this thread if you want to participate in any sort of constructive manner. Yeah I know there are a lot of posts but you can at least read the one directly after yours. That shouldn’t be too difficult.

How does that not answer your question?

No, but I fund slavery repulsive. I also find mistreatment of people because of their skin color repulsive too. This isn’t rocket science.

And I’d welcome them waving that repulsive flag on the podium. If they want to tell the world how vile they are, I’m happy to find out.

Nice try. We all know your ulterior motive in supporting flag waving. You’re just trying to lay the groundwork so you can wave your buttered bread flag all over the place

Sure, but what exactly is she protesting here? I mean, I don’t care at all if she turns around, raises a fist, kneels or whatever.

But I think it’s more of a personal attention-getter if that’s done to protest something that isn’t necessarily a clear-cut thing, or something that anyone actually ever hears/knows about, like the third verse of the National Anthem.

In other words, this seemed to be more about getting eyes on Gwen Berry, not drawing attention to whatever it is that she’s protesting.

If this thread is anything to go by, it worked.

Every visible protest calls attention to the person making the protest. Maybe some of it is positive but those folks seem to have to deal with an awful lot of shit as well.

I thought it was pretty obvious: systemic racism and the treatment of Black people in the US. What was confusing here?
