You did? I tried, since I try to like everybody here, but he’s been like that as long as I’ve been aware of him, which is going on fifteen years. I’ve concluded that he’s always been an online bully, since he first trolled a gamer BBS with his Commodore 64 because he was too cowardly to be a bully face to face.
I have met Broomstick and consider her as much a friend as anybody here. She’s knowledgeable when it counts and if she has moments when she exaggerates for effect, well, everybody does that and it’s harmless. I took her Weber story that way and cannot imagine why anybody who wasn’t trolling or picking a fight would dissect the incident or start a thread calling her out for it.
Well, that’s just whiny. People insult people in the Pit and being a whiny bitch about it is just asking for trouble.
Broomstick’s stories are worthless, and I guess it’s nice that she has knowledge of some sort, but since she is a habitual liar/exaggerator, I don’t see how you could ever trust anything she says. And I don’t really find her board persona as nice or as pleasant as some of you seem to. She sees herself as a perpetual victim and most of her stories relate to that, and most of them seem exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness. I’ve been skimming/skipping her posts for years.
I love all the people in this thread sputtering “b-b-b-b-ut she’s harmless” as though the only reason to ever bitch about something is if it comes into your house and slaps your face. You can be harmless and still be very fucking annoying.
I don’t find all of Broomstick’s stories harmless, and here’s why. They aren’t usually just supposed to be anecdotes. A lot of the time, they’re meant to illustrate some horrifying aspect of our misogynistic, classist culture. And, our culture IS misogynistic and classist, but when she tells fantastical stories that are supposed to illustrate that but that no one believes because they are so exaggerated, it causes people not only to dismiss the story but also dismiss her point. Which works against her and all the rest of us who would love to reform these negative aspects of our society. So, not harmless and actually harmful.
That is absurd. Broomstick is no more at fault for society’s problems than anyone else. Her fictions are harmless.
I’m confused by your tack. Are you suggesting that people shouldn’t be allowed to insult other people on the internet? And are you honestly suggesting that insults are bullying? Bullying is a big problem in our country but this doesn’t even come close. You need to educate yourself, you minimize the actual problem with drivel like this.
Well, on the SDMB anyway.
The issue to me is that she’s not using these exaggerated stories as entertainment, but usually to prove some point or justify some point of view.
For example, when she’s trying to school someone on pervasive negative attitudes towards handicapped people, or workplaces problems, or mistreatment of the poor through real world examples from her life, those stories better be real or what’s the point?
Curiosity is getting the better of me: where’s the insult? I don’t see him calling you any bad names or saying horrible things about you. ISTM that you can neither prove nor disprove the assertion “posted plenty of embarrassing stuff on this board” as it rests on the subjective view of the person making the assertion. Anyway, in my subjective view, it likely applies to any poster who’s been active on this site longer than a year and made a large number of posts.
Of course she’s not at fault for society’s problems, the point is she’s trying to make it better/make people aware these problems, and the stories actually actively work to make people think these problems are exaggerated because they know she’s exaggerating. It’s not a far leap to go from “that specific thing didn’t happen” to “that sort of thing doesn’t happen.” And because of this, people who are really discriminated against in the workplace and really sexually harassed and really bullied are actually harmed by these stories. It’s not Broomstick’s fault that people make that leap but in fact they do and she might want to consider that when telling her stories.
