Brown coating on apples?

(Wasn’t sure whether to post this in Cafe Society or GQ.)

I got some Jersey mac apples. They’re delicious, but they have this weird brown coating on them. It can be scraped off, and sort of smells like paint or permanent markers.

Anyone know what it is?

I do try to scrape as much of the coating off before I eat it, but some of it may have remained behind. I just hope I haven’t been eating pesticides or something.

Could it be wax?

That might be it. Thanks.
