Now that’s just evil.
I really like Opera. I guess I’m a lonewolf.
Another Opera fan. It just does things “better” than Firefox for what I usually do.
Also note: I have it set to report itself as IE to web sites. This is to get around some (but not all) idiotic “We don’t like your browser, go away.” websites.
I’m wondering if there’s an error in the way the logs are being analysed
Firefox is my default browser, but i also have Opera and use it sometimes. Opera seems to work better with some of the academic databases that i have to access through a proxy server.
And now that they have removed the advertising from the free version of Opera, it’s even more attractive.
Another reason i use Opera sometimes is that i like the versatility of its tabs, the ability to pick up a tab and move it left or right, and things like that. Yes, i know that you can do this in Firefox with an appropriate extension, but i haven’t gotten around to installing it yet.
Firefox.
And Elinks for when I need to pretend that I’m working.
It’s definitely plausible; I’ve had a few problems with the stat tracker as it is. Yet in looking at the stats, and weeding out errors based on dynamic IP addresses (counting the same person as 5 because their IP address changed) it still looks fairly accurate.
Although, thinking about it now, it only seems to log about a third of the actual hits (on days that I know for certain I had visitors, it tells me I had none; when I know that I had 10, it tells me I had 2. Things like that.) Thinking a little bit more, maybe it’s erroring out in IE 99% of the time for some strange reason… and that’s why I have so few counts on those people. Hmmm…
Apologies for the double post; I just tried the page in IE, and it appears that there is indeed a problem with the counter in IE. How odd…
Anyway, still curious to see what everyone else is using.
Firefox at home and at work.
I actually got everyone at work to start using it instead of IE.
I have Opera at home and it is nice, but the extensions have me hooked to Firefox. Between Adblock and the GMail Notifier, I’m not switching to something else.
Opera for me.
Somehow I don’t think people who use IE are going to bother to post in this thread, so it probably doesn’t represent the board accurately.
How do you get extensions for Firefox?
Well, last test I saw, Firefox had 18 serious security flaws (meaning take over control of target machine) and IE had 8. If you pay attention, you’ll see how often Firefox upgrades itself to cover new bugs and leaks.
For now, Firefox users, much like Apple users, just enjoy the pleasure of being an obscure (enough) minority. But it says little about the quality of a product.
In the last few years, IE has always followed the W3C standards better than Mozilla. Give me a cite that says this is now no longer true with Firefox.
Finally, I’ve put Firefox and IE next to each other, and quite simply, IE is faster. Faster in loading, faster in terms of displaying the page on the screen and scrolling.
Also, IE provides a really nice programmable interface that allows you to use it as a simple control in your own applications. Does firefox do that yet? I don’t think so, but I haven’t looked for it yet either (no need so far)
I’m glad that IE is starting to get some serious competition.
But I’m more than happy also to leave that competition to you guys. In the meantime, I’ll carry on with business as usual with IE.
Firefox. Not because of adware/spyware/malwae, as the OP seemed to imply, but mostly for the tabbed browsing.
I was a loyal Opera user until I discovered Gmail (which doesn’t work with Opera - or at least didn’t work at that time).
Firefox here. I run linux for everything and firefox is the best all-round browser I know.
:: putting this on::
IE6 with Norton Internet Security.
As a web developer, let me just say HA! IE hasn’t been in the forefront of W3C standards compliancy for years now. Every tried CSS 2? XHTML with the correct mime-type?
Ffirefox/mozilla, opera & safari all do better concerning W3C standards.
To answer the OP, I use Firefox at home and work, except where sites require IE. But Foaming Cleanser, can you briefly describe any improvements or changes in this version?
Fourth Opera user in the thread. That’s actually pretty surprising; I’d expect to be the first. Now, it’s free, so I recommend it even more.
And that post about IE’s superior security and standards compliance is funny.
I’m no web developer, and no expert on this subject, but just about every article i’ve ever seen on the subject disagrees with you.
Seems like I could do with a little bit of actual facts updating, so I did some browsing.
As for standards,
this article seems to confirm that IE have fallen behind again on standards support, so I’ll have to give you that one:
http://news.com.com/Next+Explorer+to+fail+Acid+test/2100-1032_3-5813897.html
Still, they’re not doing that bad, apparently. And only beta-Safari is currently meeting the full Acid2 test, at least according to Apple themselves.
As for speed,
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html
Shows that Opera seems to be a pretty good choice across the board (so much that I was personally surprised - but I hadn’t tried Opera because it wasn’t free initially, but Opera 8.0 sounds interesting!)
… and that my sense that IE was faster than FireFox (at least 1.0) was definitely correct. Especially also when it comes to starting up, especially cold. I haven’t seen any actual measurement of graphics output, probably because that’s hard to measure, but when I’m scrolling in IE or in FireFox, there’s a significant difference in speed, response and refreshrate.
As for security,
go to symantec for the latest browser security report detailing the vulnerabilities in Firefox and IE.
Also, see this:
http://www.webwereld.nl/articles/37395 (Dutch website, but English article)
It’s not a black and white world.
But for now, the Opera users in this thread definitely have something going for them.
