Its “worth” depends on a lot of factors, including costs to run it, administration, tax codes and complications, and expected income. Suffice it to say that even today internet business is a sufficiently hazy area as to render any flat number could give meaningless.

Phase 1: Create a virtual forum for nerds to wrangle endlessly about recondite topics while amusing themselves with threads about Klingon proverbs and favorite Simpons quotes.

Alternative newspapers, such as Creative Loafing, had no such excuse. They were complacent, putting more faith in their print sex ads than in tomorrow’s technology.

This sounds very similar to the management of the SDMB before Creative Loafing. Totally complacent, turning this board into a financial drain rather than a viable business model. Ignoring user suggestions in favor of editors whose career was NOT in cyberspace, but rather print space, and had no fucking clue how to make a dime on the Internet.
