Brutal Ukrainian serial killers sentenced (Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs)

If it had occurred in my area of the world and the maniacs had not yet been caught, I would definitely watch it on the off chance that I might see something that could help catch them. I wouldn’t, or couldn’t just watch it out of morbid curiosity.

I have a strong stomach but after reading that guy’s description of the video there is NO way I could watch it. I can’t imagine how it must have been for that family finding a loved one days after that has happened to him. These guys deserve to die a slow and savage death, and I say that as someone who has never favoured the death penalty.

Arrrgh - I had NO DESIRE to read the description of the video, and there I went and did it. Why on earth would I do that?

I feel your pain. Now I’m disturbed by the thought that there are people watching this thing and giving these animals the notoriety that type usually craves.

I can barely imagine the kind of degenerate excuse for a human being who would look upon these savages as role models, but the scary thing is, I know they exist!

Heh, good point. To be fair, though, this case doesn’t seem to have received much coverage at all outside of Russian-language media. The lack of coverage isn’t limited to English-language sources. On the wikipedia discussion page, one wikieditor has been questioning how reliable the story is if it hasn’t been picked up by any non-Russian media. A recent article on the case has appeared in Le Figaro, so there’s at least one French report. It is strange that almost no one in the English-language media has picked up the story at all–Caitlin Moran has an editorial about it in the Times, but I still haven’t seen a truly journalistic report of the case in UK or US media.

I don’t think there’s any reason to doubt the authenticity of the Ukrainian reports, though. It just surprises me that this story hasn’t been reported on more.

Regarding the torture of animals, as Malleus mentions, didn’t Ted Bundy, among other serial killers, torture animals as a child? Not sure if animal abuse among children is considered a clear link to future pathology, but it surely can’t be a good thing.

Anyway, cases like this are difficult to comprehend. I’m generally opposed to the death penalty, but like HongKongFooey, I’m strongly tempted to make an exception for these two monsters. At the same time, I’m disturbed by my own desire for vengeance, and I’m also very disturbed by the idea of anyone watching this video for fun. It’s strange that after so many eons of human cruelty that I can be surprised that someone can be this sadistic…but I still just don’t understand it.

I noticed that, too. It’s weird considering how they pixellated the dead cat pretty well (although that seems to have been done by wikieditors–older versions of the page have the picture of the non-pixellated cat, while the lawyer’s picture is always kind of pixellated…).

Lawyer and father of the sick fuck that held the camera and laughed while sticking a screw driver through an old man’s eye and turning his brain into slush.

The fact that I read a description of Yatzenko’s murder in such detail makes it much more real. I keep forgetting there were 20 other victims. And everyday horrible shit happens all over the world.

Fuck.

There can never be justice for a crime like this. Death is too good for them. I’m not speaking from emotion here, not even defending that meaningless trope that is the death penalty and its pal prison rape.

What astonishes me most about this case is the time scale of these evil events.

21 deaths out of 28 attacks in a month, really does seem to add weight to the idea they had a specific target and could well have been doing it for financial gain.

I used to hang out with a guy who lived through the killing fields as a kid. He drank a lot. One night he drank a little too much and painted me a picture. I’ll never forget that quiet sing-song voice describing horror after ultimate horror. His parents were chained to a tree and slowly butchered with bamboo and machetes while he was forced to watch.

It happened a million times.

It’s still happening just about every day in the Congo.

I can imagine but I’ll never understand.

I can see your point Jaglavak; there are worse atrocities elsewhere.

But, I don’t see how the average person could affect those events, whereas to prevent the type of crime in the OP, parents would only need to give a shit about what their sons were up to when they were “playing out”.

I didn’t mean to detract from the horrible crimes that happened in Dnepropetrovsk. I guess my point was that it never stops, and it doesn’t take much to explode to industrial scale. Somewhere around the world it’s happening right now. Sometimes people remind me of nothing more than a bunch of big pink pit bulls. I sure hope we do some evolving, mighty fast.

Can ANYBODY pronounce “Dnepropetrovsk?”

I agree on the former, and plead the Les Nessman clause on the latter.

Yes, there appears to be a link between childhood torture of small animals, with a progression from insects to humans, that marks the career of a serial killer. The key is that most of us, say, former Boy Scouts who left torturing 17-yr cicadas in 1965 (innocently looking around), but some did not.

That’s a GOOD thing. Trust me.

They shoot rabid dogs, don’t they?

I guess you were raised “right.” Nothing to apologize for.

Some people end up crazy. There is some chance they can be rehabilitated, but they should stay locked up for the sake of everybody else.
