I need to stick better to my New Age principles. Posting as I did here didn’t spread good karma, and for that I apologize. The fact is that if I met most of you here IRL we’d get along fine, keep our belief systems private as people tend to do, and think of each other as capital fellows.

An outsider or lurker looking in on this thread would get a good idea about the tone of this board, and it isn’t pretty. In the two fora in which real debates take place, the prevailing mode of discourse is strength-in-numbers invalidation and ostracizing. And the posters in this thread, for example, think that’s all well and good.
Thanks again, Rubystreak, for your pointing out (and drawing examples from another poster) that much of the debate here is disingenous, self-congratulatory, and foolish. Again, this hardly makes the board look good.
- All this doesn’t make the SDMB any worse than any other board. On the Web, especially when people post anonymously, the masks are off and you see people at their most petty and vicious. Further, there is a distinct bad-drives-out-good pattern in which boards get worse over time.
The battle against ignorance is taking time, but, sadly, it’s not happening here, except in GQ.
ON the contrary, I think you’re suffering from confirmation bias (note how likely you are to consider someone who supports your views to be posting in good faith, and how unlikely you are to consider someone who opposes your views to be posting in good faith). An outsider might well notice that.
When folks come along who post reasonable, thoughtful ideas that run counter to my own, I’m happy to engage in reasonable, thoughtful debate with them. When I’ve forgotten that someone tends to post like a dumbshit, I’ll start off by trying to post in a reasonable, thoughtful manner to talk wtih them (note my beginning posts in the linked threads). It’s only when they respond like a spastic colon that I turn to contempt.
You can hardly blame the board for the messes that your own threads turn into. EO Wilson is not a dummy; although I don’t agree with all his conclusions*, he’s precisely the sort of reasonable, thoughtful intellectual opponent that I adore. Rather than engaging his ideas in a reasonable, thoughtful manner, however, you came in, squirtguns ablazing, accusing him incomprehenbily of intellectual foibles that he almost certainly doesn’t possess, and offering no reasonable evidence to support your accusations.
When a lot of folks pooh-pooh your thread, it’s not because we’re the Skeptics Cabal joining together to drive out a scintillating intellectual maverick like yourself: it’s because we can all smell shit when it’s nearby.

That’s simply more self-pitying nonsense. Real debate is alive and well on this board. Your approach has typically been arguing from a position of nonsense and resorting to personal insult and evasion when challenged. I predict eventually one of your ad hominem GD posts will be reported, you’ll be warned, you won’t modify your behaviour (while complaining that you’re being infringed upon), you’ll be banned and barring a few sock-puppets, that’ll be the end of your involvement with this board. An equally determinedly ignorant person will eventually take your place and life will go on. This’ll have nothing to do with being New Age; it’ll have everything to do with being a jerk.
If you’re going to bother apologizing at all (and it’s entirely unnecessary in the Pit, anyway), please do so for more mundane reasons such as firing off a lot of baseless insults and failing to provide support for any of them. Karma, I’m sure, can take care of itself.

And you are helping raise the tone of the board how exactly? As I’ve gone through the thread, you’ve displayed just as many nasty tendencies as anyone else here, if not more.
Don’t go getting up on that high horse just yet. You’re just as mud spattered as the rest of the crowd. If you want, I can go dredge up a bunch of cites from the board. I’d just prefer to wait and see if you can admit to your own faults first.
