First off, let me get this out of the way, i’m a die-hard 'Scaper, Farscape is the yardstick by which i measure how good a sci-fi show is, so i’m admittedly biased, bear that in mind while reading this thread
i noticed many common traits shared by BSG and FS…
both shows have their own unique units of measurement and profanities ('Scape has more varieties though…)
both shows aren’t afraid to be “dark” and “kill off” main characters, remember, you have to look at it from the standpoint of the television viewer at the time, for example, right now it appears that Cmdr Adama is pushing up daisies, he’s bereft of life, he rests in peace…
do i think he’s truly dead, no, they’ll probably find a way to revive him in S2, they may toy with us for a while, pulling a mind-frak or two, but that’s to be expected in a dark series like BSG
Farscape also had no hesitation in “killing off” main characters…
S1 finale; “Family Ties” D’Argo is blown out of Moya and exposed to the hard vaccum of space, by the time they get to him, he appears to be dead…
S2; midseason ep “The Ugly Truth”, Stark is “dispersed” to save the rest of the crew from being executed by the Plakavoids (Plokavians)
S2 finale; “Die me Dichotomy” (arguably one of the DARKEST 'Scape eps…) the neural chip in Crichton’s head possesses him, Crichton-Scorpy then ends up killing Aeryn (crashing into her Prowler with his Farscape 1 Module with the landing gear deployed, the collision damages Aeryn’s ejection seat, she’s unable to release herself from the seat before it plummets into the icy seas of a planet, drowning her), with Aeryn dead, Crichton has nothing left to live for, as he’s strapped to the Diagnosian table so the doctor can extract the neurochip, the Doc tells him that it’s too heavily integrated into his brain, and that removing it may destroy his ability to speak
“i got no one left to talk to, take it out”
as the Doc is extracting the Neurochip, Scorpius shows up, kills the Doc, steals the chip, and leaves Crichton strapped to the table, only able to speak in gibberish…
as Crichton screams in rage, fade to black…
S3 midseason ep “Infinite Possibilities, Icarus Abides” Talyn-John is exposed to a massive burst of radiation, dies in Aeryn’s arms of severe radiation poisoning
S3 Midseason ep “Into the Lion’s Den, Wolf in Sheeps clothing”, Talyn and Crais go to Starburst inside Scorpy’s command carrier, killing them both and destroying the CC
S3 finale; “Dog with Two Bones” the crew is splitting up, going their seperate ways (Scorpy is no longer seen as a threat), Crichton is in his module, thinking (the module is low on power and fuel), suddenly, Moya is sucked down a wormhole, leaving Crichton stranded in his module deep in the Uncharted Territories, no fuel and little power…
S4; Series Finale “Bad Timing” Chiana goes blind using her “time-slowdown” vision to memorize the control sequence she needs to input into Moya’s command console (Stark couldn’t handle it and was panicking…as usual) John and Aeryn are in a boat, Aeryn reveals she’s pregnant, and the father is Crichton, as John proposes with his Mother’s ring, an alien ship flies by, shoots them and “Crystalizes” them, John and Aeryn’s bodies appear to disintegrate into a pile of goo, D’argo lets out a heart-rending scream, Chiana, being blind, can only hear what has happened, the camera cuts back to the boat, focusing on the wedding ring in a pile of crystals, fade to black and “To be Continued”
Peacekeeper Wars; the Idelon’s home planet is destroyed by the wormhole weapon, D’Argo dies in battle defending his freinds (he died with Honor!), John and Aeryn name their son “D’Argo Sun-Crichton” in his honor
that said, ‘Scape also has more than it’s fair share of funny eps as well…
Crackers Don’t Matter, Out of their Minds, the BRILLIANT ep “Won’t get Fooled Again”, Scratch N’ Sniff, and the utterly brilliant, pitch-perfect Road Runner cartoon parody "Revenging Angel, the bizzare John Quixote, and the great “Earth-Arc” stories of “Kansas”, “Terra Firma” and “A Constellation of Doubt”
Number of time-travel eps in BSG…none (so far)
number of time-travel eps in 'Scape…2 (out of 89 shows, compare that ratio to Trek;) )
number of “reset button” eps in BSG…none (so far, and lets hope it stays that way)
number of “reset button” eps in 'Scape…1 (out of 89 shows)
the nice thing about one of the time travel eps (“Different Destinations”) is that not only did the time travel not put things back to normal, it actually made things WORSE, Crichton has to live with the knowledge that his (accidental) timeline meddling cost the lives of hundreds of innocents and changed the history of a local planet for the worse…
BSG is in good company being compared to 'scape, BSG is better than 'Scape for the “gritty reality” feel, but 'Scape has BSG beaten on the humorous front
