Surely I can’t be the first to start a thread about this but a search turns up nothing.
Well, if I am the first, then here goes: Wow! They finally caught him. And he’s an Elder in the local Lutheran church and a boy scout leader to boot!
Since he left so many clues recently, it seems obvious he wanted to be caught. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it was he, and not some brilliant detective work, that lead to his arrest. For the same reason, I believe he will want to tell his story and we’ll get an insight into his twisted mind. Whee!
I don’t know much about the history of serial killers, so I’m wondering why you say this isn’t surprising. Are there a high number of serial killers who turned out to be churchgoing Boy Scout leaders?
Am I the only one who’s a bit skeptical? Everything I’ve heard about serial killers says that they can’t stop themselves, and that if a serial killer “disappears” then he’s probably either dead, in jail, or fled the area. What kind of evidence do they have on this guy?
He’s said to be meticulous. (Have we ever had an SK who wasn’t?) As a city compliance officer, he was responsible for enforcing minor ordnances like lawn length or trash at curbs, and apparently capable of excessive anger when challenged about them. This is a guy who needs to give orders and get obedience. Question is, what makes someone like that a torture murderer rather than, let’s just say, a BDSM master?
As a rule, I look with suspicion upon all kinds of neatniks, anal-compulsives and control freaks. Perhaps we should start a public education campaign about these folks. Even those who aren’t a danger to public safety spread ill will far and wide.
What I’m still wondering about is how he managed to ritually tie up and strangle an entire family of 4. That takes time. Why not just pack a piece and execution-style 'em? He didn’t try to bag any more families, I think because he realized the risk.
It’s just that they never turn out to be the outwardly-twisted bloody hockeymask and coveralls-wearing monsters that people expect them to be.
John Wayne Gacy threw block parties, dressed as a clown to entertain sick kids, and was loved by his neighbors. Ted Bundy was a college educated ladies man.
