Buck Knives

Off topic:

I have a yellow handle Imperial folding Fish Knife that I bought new in the late-'80s or early-'90s. It’s not high-quality. But it was cheap, and kind of fun for its cheapness. Also, ‘Fish Knife’ sounds like ‘Fishwife!’ Apparently, it’s ‘vintage’ now… which I don’t appreciate. I haven’t fished since I was 15, but I still have the knife in a cup with my pens. And I’ve ordered a much-higher quality Case version.

I’ve got a Buck Omni Hunter. For a folder it’s kinda huge. Not an every day carry for sure, but it’s a nice knife. I’m not a hunter, I just like knives and I thought this was a cool one.

I thought I had two Buck Knives, one folding and one fixed blade, I inherited from my uncle. But I just looked and they have a Schrade mark.

Uncle Henry?

Yeah! Thanks. I had no idea what type they were, but two of those photos match.

I’m guessing the Bear Paw and the Golden Spike?

I’m getting some serious “The call is coming from inside the house” right now. If you’re in my office you better leave or start helping me clean up the place. Yes. You are 100% correct.

Schrades are pretty damned nice knives; you didn’t get a consolation prize.

I have the 110 back in the USA. One of my few Swiss Army knives is with me all the time.

I didn’t know it at the time - and would not have cared - yet my Leatherman, having a locking blade, is not legal in the UK. They can pry it from my cold dead hands.

I have a couple of schrade “old timer” knives. They are great. Take a nice edge easily.

I’ve got one of the folding ones like above. When I got it, the brass was green. I got it pretty well cleaned up… and it sits in the tool box, clean but never used.

My best friend in High School had one of those big-ass ones. Carried it all over. Well, on a short hike, it fell out of the scabbard and he was devastated! We retraced our steps and I spotted it (his vision sucked) after a while. Never seen him happier!

He’s dead now.

The first Buck 110 I had was given to me by my uncle, used it mostly for cleaning squirrels. Lost in a move. Found one on the road between the two earthen dams at Twin Buttes Resevoir in San Angelo, TX, some guys apparently had to move quickly and left it behind - they had jacklighted a deer. Used it for utility work & dressing deer. Again, lost in a move.

Last year my half-sister sent me a whole box of knives that had belonged to her dad. Among them are a Buck 522 folder, which is pretty much a dress pocket knife, brushed stainless handle and polished blade, a Buck 307 3-blade folder, and a Buck 120 in the original leather sheath. There was also a Schrade LB7, which I keep in my “possibles bag”, which was Schrade’s answer to the 110, and a Case XX, which was a smaller version. Her dad passed better than 30 years ago, so they’re at least that old, and probably 40.

Do you know the model?

P158 LSSP. Thank og for cell phone cameras that work well as a magnifying glass

My Case XX Slimline Trapper is what I’m currently carrying in my pocket.

A Case XX fishing knife should arrive Tuesday – though I don’t fish, and don’t have a use for it.

I carry a The 55 Mini 110 Folding Hunter. Drop Point. It is used nearly every day for something.

Good sturdy little knife. Nice size for your pocket.

I can’t take it on a plane of course. And I always need it for something when I travel.

I had a tiny Browning multi tool that I kept in my dop kit. About a 1 inch blade. It was kinda handy for traveling. Forgot about it and it go confiscated by airport security. :sigh:

You got unlucky. I use small knives for all sorts of minor stuff. (Some things that other people use their teeth for, as my front teeth don’t meet.) And I’ve often forgotten to fish out all the knives from my luggage. I can’t count the number of times I’ve inadvertantly smuggled a knife through airport security. And I’ve only had them find a knife twice. Both times i ended up checking that bag, rather than giving them the knife. They left me cut in line to return to security after i did it, too. (That is, they offered me the option of checking the bag, and told me if i did so, i could cut in line on my return.)

The only time i was caught with a knife that might plausibly be a weapon was on the chunnel. I hadn’t expected airport-like security, and they don’t have any way to “check” a bag. They called the supervisor over, gave me a stern lecture, and let me carry the knife. It was a folding “old timer”, with maybe a 3" blade, or a bit less, and it locks in the open position. They told me it would have been okay if it hadn’t been a locking knife.

These days my EDC is a Kershaw 1605. The Bucks languish in the camping kit, where alas, they get little use.

Yeah. I think the TSA guy was kinda embarrassed. I said “Keep it, Merry Christmas” and was on my way.

A little muti-tool like that can be handy when traveling and the zipper on your luggage is stuck or something.

I have a Buck LT185 “survival knife”. I wanted a hiking knife, but I wanted something “cool”, and saw this in the store and knew it was the one. It certainly looks cool, but I’m not sure how your hand would feel after creating a survival shelter holding that flat handle. But I’m pretty sure I could cut a guy out of a downed airplane with it.
