Those were a mystically-inflicted “test”. After Willow vomited the snake, it appeared that the wounds either closed completely, or had begun to heal (you can see her arm in the foreground). Presumably, the testing portion of the spell ended after the regurgitation of the snake.
Yeah, I figured it was something like that. You never know, though, those ancient gods of death probably have infinite potential for being assholes. Kinda surprised the column of fire didn’t burn off all of Willow’s clothes, come to think of it.
That would have added a lot to the episode too.

I just re-watched the season premiere, and noticed something amusing I’d missed the first time: the vampire who snitches about Buffybot to the demon bikers was wearing a Hanson t-shirt.
