I’ve read several posts written by different authors commenting either seriously or with tongue-in-cheek about members “trying to build up their posts”. It escapes me why building up posts is an honor or a goal or would have any significance. Please clue me in.
Well, Skelton, you obviously don’t understand two things:
- We people like round numbers, like 10, 100, 500, 1000, etc. I think it’s related to our fetish for breasts, really.
- Also, a large number of posts is a sign of prestige. If you have more posts, your opinion is given more weight, and it’s a better sign that you’re ‘in’. Get it?
Oh, and look at me, I’m almost to 540!
I sold my soul to Satan for a dollar. I got it in the mail.
Skelton,
A lot of people around here get very excited about high post numbers- I don’t find it a big deal, myself. I didn’t have a 1000 post party or anything else. Now that the numbers are displayed by each post, though, I think people are anxious to be thought of as a “Veteran” as opposed to a “Newbie”. Personally, there are people here with thousands of posts that I think are idiots, and newbies that are quite fun to read. Makes no difference to me

The upshot of this is that my opinion, like yours, doesn’t amount to shit. Yet
I’ll be having my 30th post party in a couple of weeks. You’re all invited. I hope Zette and Nemo can attend.
Don’t mind me. Just building up my posts…
Yer pal,
Satan
Bug Vomit,
Have I told you lately that I love you (r screen name?)
I do-
By the way, I hope I didn’t come off as a bitch- I said it didn’t matter to me, but I am certainly happy for those that choose to celebrate

Of all the lame, idiotic, juvenile ways to build up your post count skelton, this one takes the cake.
Most people just post MPS here about their lives, and when other posters do the same, chime in with the appropriate sentiment “Oh, geez, that sucks, good luck, fantastic, I’m sorry, whatever”.
Some people just post test messages in the ATMB thread.
APB resorted to a flame war with APB; now that was creative.
But a thread dedicated to discussing post count is a little transparent, don’t you think…

I wear my low post number proudly as a badge that I actually have a life outside of an Internet bulletin board.
My best wishes and deepest sympathy for the first person to 5000.

This thread sure looks, walks and quacks like an invitation for a drive-by post…
I didn’t even notice I hit 1000 or 2000.
I was hoping for some sign of intelligence in one of them.
Well, the way I see it, the number of posts is seen as a rough indicator of a poster’s “value”. The more posts they have, the more familiar they are with the board, and the more “authoritative” their pronouncements become. It doesn’t really mean a damn thing, of course. The milestone post parties that spring up occasionally are just the message board equivalent of saying “hey, do you realize that we’ve known each other for six months as of today?” and things like that.
That being said, does anyone else find the fact that the number of posts is availible for all to see mildly disconcerting? It’s as if every man and woman in America woke up one morning and discovered that their penis and bust sizes, respectively, were tattoed on their foreheads.
An infinite number of rednecks in an infinite number of pickup trucks shooting an infinite number of shotguns at an infinite number of road signs will eventually produce all the world’s great works of literature in Braille.
And a fine day that would be, too
What’s my count up to now?

Oooohhhh, who ever it was with the dig on haveing a live outside of message boards, GOOD ONE!

I have been posting on and off at the straight dope for a year or two. I have no friends here, no one knows me and I usually don’t have a thing to say. But now with this post counter I’ll be here everyday. Competition for supremecy and good spelling still ring true here and the prior just got measurable, thanks to the post counter.
