You and your post count

At the moment, I’m part of several communities outside of the 'dope, and I have to say, none of them are as welcoming to newbies as we are here. It seems to be a recurring trend that people strive for a high post count (therefore proving their superiority) by posting the most inane stuff. A side note to say that I’m glad this board holds a higher regard for quality than quanitity. But anyway, I guess this “poll” comes in two parts.

Outside of this community, what was the highest post count you’ve had? A couple of years ago, I was part of a band’s message board. I used to spend hours a day on there, sifting through the threads and replying to as many as I can regardless of how much I had to contribute to the topic. For a while, I would go into a thread, put a " " and leave. If it was done here, it would have raised some fuss and pittings, I’ll bet. But then again, this was a board filled with young teenage girls who were on at 10 on a weeknight because it’s past their curfew and too early for bed. Besides, it was a band’s message board, so any intelligence was minimal. After all this has been said and done, I was on it for about two years before it’s demise and gathered a total of ~25000 give or take a few hundred.

Second part, how relevant are post counts to you? In the board where I had ~25000 posts, I thought I was hot stuff because of the high post counts. It’s now that I realise, “Hey, high post counts = no life = pathetic.” So, now, I honestly say, I disregard a person’s post count when I’m looking at a topic. It doesn’t change my opinion of the person and/or topic if I know that this person has a post count of 1000 vs 1. Honestly, makes no difference to me.

This is my first board. I never look at my post counts. I’m not the kind of person for it to mean anything to me anyway. So what if a person has 10 posts or 10,000? Either they have something to say … or not.

My highest was 1000. They scare me. They indicate that I’m spending too much damn time on the internet.

I just passed 1000 on this one, I just passed 2000 on another and all up would have maybe another 1000 on another except that half the posts got deleted in a board crash. Generally, I don’t even read names let alone post counts however, if I start reading an OP that starts off exceedingly nutty or ignorant, I’ll scroll up and check the poster. If they’re someone with 500+ posts, I generally give them a chance and read till the end. If they are lower, I skim through and then laugh at the replies.

I’m posting this post just so I can see my post count.

I have no idea as I never look.

25,000 posts, 7?

I registered here back in 2000 as a freshling in college. I’m always reading, but seldom posting, for one reason or another.

And this is the only message board I have ever been a member of. I’m of the mind that any other board would be a major let-down after experiencing the almighty SDMB.

I have been using one other message board for about six months now. My post count there is (let me check)… 173.

Post counts don’t matter to me though. Like Moo the Magic Cow, I’ll keep an eye on them purely too see how little of a social life I have these days.

My highest was just under 10,000. I don’t go there anymore.

Oh, oh. I have done this here, and I don’t see anything wrong with it if that’s one’s comment. Like  = cool.

I think many people have jobs that allow them to post all day, but my work is not sitting at a desk all day, so that makes a difference in post counts. The post count doesn’t have much meaning to me. But I know that it’s all personal. I rarely post to other boards. This has been my most consistent. This is the intelligent choice!

Post count, shmost count. You can have 20,000 posts to your name and have said far less than someone with only 200. Quality, not quantity, is what matters most, especially, I think, on the SDMB.

The board that I would’ve had the highest post count on was an AOL board, and therefore didn’t count posts. However, I was on that board for ::counts on fingers:: about four years, and I posted between 2-3 per day.

So between 2922 and 4383 posts, with the most likely number being around 3600.

I don’t post a lot, but I’m fairly constant in my number of posts. I have about 1300 here, I think, and would have about 1600 without The Winter of Our Missed Content. ::shrug:: Fortunately for me, it purged at least one embarassing thread, so I’m not complaining.

I managed to rack up about 10,000 on an entire message board network (EZBoard) about two years ago but that name was banned for my being a naughty boy.

er. I have over 5,000 here but I’m not sure exactly. I have just under 5,000 on a board I am the Admin for, somewhere under 300 over on Una’s board and maybe over 100 over at Fathom.

I’m one that doesn’t always even look at the name let alone post counts. My post count to thread reading ratio is about a gazillion to one.

However, if I see someone that is posting nonsense, I usually look to see how long they’ve been a member and their post count. I tend to give a little more leeway to newbies for loonie posts. That’s the only time I think they’re relevant to me.

It’s quality not quantity.

I don’t look at ones post count as much as I look at their time of registration. How long has someone been here. As we can all rack up points in a short time if we want to.
Honestly, when I first came here I was a little intimidated by high post counts, but now in a short few months I have come to realise it means nothing when I’m reading something interesting , or laughung at a funny thread.

I tend to roll my eyes at excessive post counts. I subconsciously tend to respect posters who have been registered a long time and have few posts. It makes me think “this person puts thought into what they toss up on a message board,” or at the very least “this person has a life of some kind.” Neither of which I would neceessarily apply to myself.

I don’t know how I haven’t broken 500 in two years.

I have too much to say… my count is growing like a mutant fungus! ARRRRGH! I’m past 700 somewhere…

None of the other boards or rooms I belong to have the “post count” thingie, just this one.

And I don’t pay too much attention to my own, or anyone else’s post count. Likely due to belonging to “non-post count” sites, prior to SDMB, so it wasn’t something I was used to, or trained to notice.

Once in a while I’ll see mine and be surprised thinking “I don’t remember posting that much since the last time I looked”.

Of if I notice someone seems to be posting in a rather hostile or non-SDMB way, I’ll glance over and give them the benefit of the doubt if they’re “just” newbies. Sometimes folks need a few hundred posts to get their “SDMB legs”. I know I did.
