I’ve just heard on the radio that Gregory Peck has passed-away, aged 87.
Vale Mr. Peck. You were always a gentleman.

I am very saddened by this. I love(d) his work.
I grew up watching his movies on television. Listening to my mum talk about him and his work, along with the other great stars.
RIP, sir.
He starred in two of my favorites: Gentleman’s Agreement and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Wow. Let’s just say that my mother’s choice of names for me was extremely influenced by this guy being so cool.
I think my favourite was The Boys From Brazil.
Vale? What’s that mean?
I’m so saddened by this news. I loved him. His work was extraordinary. He had class.
It’s Latin for “farewell”, when speaking to one person.
If you’re saying “farewell” to more than one person, it’s valete. Sometimes used at graduation ceremonies.
If you’re saying “farewell to meat”, as you might just before Lent, it’s carne vale, whence the English word Carnival (via similar words in various Romance languages).
I was heartened to see his character Atticus Finch voted the #1 movie hero by the AFI not a week ago.
If you’re saying farewell to your car, it’s valet.
And if it’s your Chrysler, its Valiant.
I had to read “To Kill a Mocking Bird” in 8th grade. Recently, I’ve been re-reading it at Barnes & Nobles.
(Sniff) My sainted dog Atticus was named that because the day I got him we stayed up late, the puppy and I, and watched TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD on the late show. I hope that maybe St. Francis can arrange a day-pass for my Atticus so he can go over to Human Heaven from Doggie Heaven and meet Mr. Peck at last. Attie wold like that. (More sniffling. Blowing my nose on a paper towel. Can you tell that I’ve had two rum-and-Cokes?)
Second greatest Peck film: ROMAN HOLIDAY. The chemistry between him and Audrey Hepburn is marvelous.
