Bumping one's own threads

I’m not sure about whether it’s ever OK to bump one’s own thread. Sometimes I post a very obscure topic in GQ or IMHO, but because hardly anyone can offer answers or comments, it sinks like a stone. Yet I’m sure that eventually someone will come along who can answer it; the only trouble is that zero-response threads that have sunk are rarely if ever seen by anyone.

So is it permissible to bump a thread to keep it in view?

Sure, just wait longer than half an hour or you’ll get cramps.

It’s probably about as permissible as posting a thread that should most likely be in ATMB in the pit
I’ll be running away now…

I only posted it here because I thought the Pit was the place for discussions about board policy (not that I really want to discuss, I just want an authoritative answer).

I agree, a lot of what’s supposed to be in the Pit would probably be more appropriate in ATMB, especially when there are questions regarding moderator/administrator actions.

Heh. You seem to have it exactly backwards, javaman. Question of policy, or a technical nature go to ATMB. Like your OP. It’s questions of specific staff actions that belong in the Pit, since that’s generally where they ended up prior to our making that policy.

So, I don’t know the answer to your question. We don’t really have a piece of policy that covers this. Myself, I don’t see anything terribly wrong with bumping one’s own threads—within reason. All we really ask is that our members exercise their better judgement.

And to complete the job, instead of doing it half-assed, I suppose I should move this thread to ATMB.

Bumping a thread - IMHO: OK to do it once, rude to do it more than once, obnoxious to do it more than twice.
Some forum guidance in re questions on SDMB policy:
[ul][li]To ask “What is the accepted way of doing something at the SDMB?” put your post in ATMB.[/li][li]To ask “Why is this the accepted way to do something at the SDMB?” Should probably be in the BBQ Pit, but there are borderline cases.[/li]To ask “Why is this the accepted way to do something at the SDMB? I think it would be better if you did it another way.” The BBQ Pit.[/ul]

P.S. I just posted those forum guidelines in the “FAQ on guidelines for posting” ATMB sticky thread.

Unless someone sees a reason to keep this open, I suggest it be closed…

Thanks to everyone who replied.

And now it’s off to GQ to bump one (1) thread…
