I’ve just been following the Marlin’s - Padres game over on Yahoo. A.J. Burnett struck out 7, walked 9, and still managed to pitch a scoreless, no-hitter.
This, along with Johnson’s 20 K, no share of the record performance and Nomo’s attempt at 2 no-no’s makes me think we’re in for one of the best baseball seasons in years (down with offence!!). What a crazy, beautiful game it is! I love it.
p.s. I was lucky enough to have a personal stake in this one. I’m in Zev’s SDMB fantasy league, and I just happened to pick up Burnett as spot starter as I try to fine-tune my team. I had and have no intention of keeping him – in fact, I’d put him on waivers before the game started. But I do get his stats for this game as part of my overall record.
It’s a heartless game, too. Ha. Another reason I love it.
Burnett has always had a lot of potential. 9 walks still isn’t that many baserunners, but more walks than strikeouts is a bit worrisome.
Florida has a hell of a rotation, with Dempster, Clement, Burnett, C. Smith and Penny, with Nunez and Grilli as additional options.
Not only that, but they have probably the best minor league pitching prospect in baseball, in Josh Beckett. They may very well contend in a year or two.
Oh good, I’m not the only one. I came expressly to post that I could have sworn the title of the post read “Hitler”
last night. I guess that’s what I get for reading the Board when I’m tired.
What? jc, you don’t think Philly is for real? Ha.
I think you’re right about Florida. They have a real potential for offence to go along with all that pitching.

particlewill, I’m lucky I’d just swallowed my last sip of coffee before I read your post. Otherwise, I’d be trying to clean my keyboard.
