Burning rubber-like odor from plastic blinds: dangerous?

My folks just installed a new set of plastic vertical blinds in one room. However, a very offensive odor is emanating from them, which I presume to be some kind of plastic or plastic-treatment residue. It smells something like burning rubber, and it’s quite pervasive.

Is this odor likely to be harmful if breathed until the smell goes away? (It is weakening over time.) Or is the damage already done?

Should I advise them to get out of the house for a few more days, or what?

Please advise…

If they were in my house I would do one of two things…Put a fan on them for a couple of days to see if whatever chemicals/adhesives or whatever it is that’s leaching out of the plastic goes away (the fan may speed the process) OR call the company and ask them. Of course you could also just return them and get a different brand.
