Bush whacking

Very few males who are my age (21) care for Bush, the band. Y chromosome owners seem more or less neutral on the subject. In fact, my declarations of fandom often result in actual jeering from my so-called friends. I only recently “got into” them, mind you, and before purchasing their albums, I knew nothing about them, including this stigma directed at their fans. All I know is I appreciate their sound and lyrics. So what did they do to deserve such bile and rancor from the general public?

Well, In My Humble Opinion (hint, hint), the problem is that girls squeal over that Gavin character. Most guys hate the one who hogs all the trim.

Oh.

I got inspired there for a minute, thinking this was about Dubbya.

Never mind; continue.

Well, maybe because they are so, like, 4 years ago.

They’re just not popular anymore. Their lack of radio play time is not helping much either. I think radio stations are only playing one song off their latest album.

Darn, I thought this thread was about sex.

YOu can tell a lot about people by what they thought this thread is about: either politics or masturbation. I confess, I was looking forward to a juicy “I touch myself” thread.

I love Bush and I don’t think they are played out. Their brand of music is certainly less mainstream these days, Korn without the bilious hatred and too rock to fit in with the boy bands.

I agree that Gavin is sexy. Five words: Hot sex on a platter. Yum-MAY! Maybe this is why boys hate them, the same reason they hate boy bands - they get all the attention.

I guess this thread is about sex after all, Silo.

I had a feeling the answer lied in Gavin’s looks, which is a shame. He doesn’t write the music of a Beautiful Person. Few give Bush the chance, however, and those who do are too often predispositioned to loathing. “Letting the Cables Sleep,” off of their newest (and IMO, best) album, “The Science of Things,” is an absolutely breathtaking song.

As for them being “so four years ago,” I KNOW IT, DUDE! I’m like that, musically. What was popular approximently four/five years ago is considered current within the boundaries of my space-time continuum. That’s why I’m into all of those HOT NEW BANDS, like +LiVE+, Soundgarden, and R.E.M.

Also, I’ve heard that at one point there existed some friction between Bush and the Foo Fighters, something over a Veruca Salt band member, Bush’s similarities to Foo headman Groehl’s former band Nirvana, a rumored affair between Rossdale and Courtney Love, etc. I remember reading Groehl paraded around on stage once with a shirt reading “Bu$h.” Get it? Bush sold out! Har har! Since it’s more socially acceptable for male listeners to embrace the Foo Fighters, I can see why they might heed Groehl’s word and dislike Bush.

That would make me soooo 1978

I admit it, I was expecting another pubic hair shaving thread. But Sara’s idea sounds fun too!

How long has R.E.M. been around ? They might get my vote for being the Rolling Stones of Alternative Music (not necessarily a bad thing mind you).

Maybe it’s because none of us can have Gwenn Stefani after Gavin fouled her?

I believe Murmur was released in 1983, so they’ve been around for quite awhile. And yes, they truly are amazing, very talented, and, against all odds, I might add, are very down-to-earth folks. Michael Stipe always struck me as a compassionate, articulate, albeit misunderstood guy. In the past year or so, I’ve purchased just about all of their albums. Before then, I never gave them a second look. It’s like I was living under a rock all those years.

Oh, wait…I WAS living under a rock all those years. Thank God a Park Ranger finally stumbled upon my crushed, emaciated body. I was getting so sick of having to eat lichen morning, noon, and night.

I can’t take Bush seriously. Woodstock '99. They were the last act on the main stage Friday night. I was sitting on a hill, high above the field, falling asleep to the soothing sounds of Gavin being angry, when he attempts some between-song banter. “You know what’s great about this? Woodstock '99, man! We are all together! Americans, Englishmen, white, black, we’re here all together!” I looked at my friend, he looked at me, and I said "Dude, we have GOT to go to bed before I totally loose respect for this man. He agreed.

Unfortunately, I can’t take you seriously. You actually went to Woodstock '99.

Oh my goodness, we’ve got a live one here.

Yeah, Coldfire.
