Here’s a little fact of life.

Those who understand this concept are the people who move up the ladder and are successful. Those who don’t get it, are usually stuck in a no-advancement position or they are found in the unemployment line. Simple as that. I don’t know about you, but I would rather be on the successful end of that equation.

It’s not hard to see those who “get it” and those who don’t.

No matter how proficient you may be, screwing off on company time shows management that you are not working to your potential and gives you the title of a fuck-off. There are exceptions such as janitorial, home satellite jobs, or other positions where you work alone or something that is based solely on quota production, but for most corporate offices, screwing around an excessive amount of time each day on company time will eventually land your ass in the unemployment line. Like it or not, that’s how the game is played. It’s not only work quota, but also reputation, ambition, and appearances plays a huge part in promotions and moving up the ladder. It is the screw offs who don’t go anywhere except eventually out the door.

If you are so efficient at your job that it enables you to have 2, 3, 4, hours to fuck off on company time, then (1) you need more work, or (2) you should be working on a part-time status.

I will assume you are referring to me. I don’t understand your terminology of social loafers - explain (did you make that up?). If you are assuming that I am too serious and social inept at work, then I laugh my ass off in your face. As I said, when things get stressful (and they do often considering we are a counseling office for the mental disabled and homeless) you haven’t seen the meaning of the phrase “fucking off” until you see me (who the hell do you think started the “Afternoon Cartwheel Contest”? The difference is, is that I know the limits. De-stressing doesn’t mean a couple of hours spent on the internet during company time.

As far as your second accusation, I went from a starting position (minimum wage) and within a very short time I advanced to the position I hold now ($60,000.00 + ). For the last 9 years I have received the highest level of annual performance award. I didn’t get there by “taking all day to do something someone else could do in half the time.” I also didn’t get there by screwing off when my work was finished. Guess that’s what you get for assuming.

Hey, if I met my quota early, I would keep working until I met it several times and then point out to the boss my marvelous performance & ask for a promotion.

Diane, you make $60,000 at an agency that works for the mentally disabled and homeless?

Jeez, and people wonder why there are no decent shelters or drop-in drug and mental health clinics . . .

This pissed me off Flora and we are very close to heading for the Pit with your ignorant assumptions. You are assuming things that you know nothing about. Do me a favor and don’t.

My salary does not come from any source of funding for shelters or treatment facilities. I do not work for the State (which BTW, finances the shelters as well as the treatment centers). We are a Federally funded facility. These funds are SEPARATE from the funds that pay the salaries of Federal employees, so your remark makes absolutely no sense. If you are familiar with the Federal budget, you would understand that these funds have absolutely no bearing on one another.

Our salaries are a lot lower than the national average (the State employees are even lower than ours) compared to those in the private sector. If I were to leave my position and go into private practice, I would make at least $20,000.00 more each year. I don’t, because I love my job here.

HA! I KNEW Diane’s head would burst into flames!

Ike, you owe me five bucks!

I re-read my post and I don’t think I made my point.

The budget that supports Federally funded shelters and other facilities is TOTALLY separate from the salary budget. Each account is SEPARATELY budgeted by Congress and one has no affect over the other.

So you were trolling, huh?

I don’t know if I was “trolling.”

I was mildly teasing and deflating the pomposity of someone who seems to, on a no-doubt busy Friday afternoon, have left her sense of humor in her other purse.

If I’m not working, I’m loafing. That’s the whole idea of working, so you can have some quality loafing time. The more quality loafing time, the better. Nobody is talking about working at half pace. We’re talking about people who are effiecient and have screw off time to show for it. This shows me that Kelli and Diane’s bosses need a lesson in utilization management, or something that would give them a clue on their manpower needs. In Dianes case, it was her ex-boss who should have been canned for not knowing what his/her subordinates were doing. “We didn’t know you were a screw-off until we looked at your browser” is totally chicken shit, and demonstrates a lack of knowlege of the day to day goings on in the office.

My personal experience has been that if you’re good at your job and finish early, the powers that be thank you for it for about a nanosecond and then give you more to do – or more responsibility, but not necessarily more pay – to fill the “free” time. Meanwhile the idiot who can’t ever seem to get the job done just gets less and less responsibility because no-one wants to deal with the problem a/o f**k-ups. Or, if you finish early, you get asked to finish the idiot’s work/project for him/her.

My personal response has always been to still do the best job I can, just because it’s my personal MO, but I can see how others draw a different conclusion.

Mind you this is working “salaried” and not on commissions.

Huh? My ex-boss? I don’t have an ex-boss nor did I mention one. Did you confuse me with another poster?

This is what I said, which is contrary to what you are quoting me as saying:

Flora - I am not at work. Today is my down-Friday on a compressed work schedule, so no, it isn’t a busy Friday afternoon.

I have a wonderful sense of humor, but I will also come out swinging when someone hits below the belt and makes an unfair assumption about my personal life when they no nothing about it.

Isn’t it easy to toss out a flame and then cry “joke” when you’re called on it?

Wrong but Wromantic v Right but Repulsive

(IMHO Diane needs a surgical procedure to remove the twenty-foot <SMUG> plank from her rectum).

Live long and prosper

Except, of course, that she was right.

Sorry I couldn’t get back to you sooner…I was too busy WORKING! ppphhhbbbttt! hehe, anyway, here are some crummy references:

Oh shit…sorry Diane. I meant Atrael. Yes, Atrael. Replace all reference to Diane in my last post with Atrael.

(Good thing I wasn’t on the clock)

What Kelli was ** really** talking about here was being betrayed by somebody she thought was a friend. I’ve had that experence at work. Left my stomach upset for a week afterwards.

YO-HO, ME HEARTIES! ALL HANDS ON DECK FOR THE MUSICAL BATTLE AT SEA!

I agree with Diane - anyone routinely shattering their monthly quotas oughta be able to get their own computer and post from h o m e, home. Y’know, like I do. I work with someone who spends a lot of time loafing on the net and it really sucks.
It is as if to say, “Tell me … why are they paying you again?”
