Buster Crabbe

“Bust her Crabs?” Wow… just wow.

Buster Crabbe = Bust her crabs ? - That’s such a long, overbalanced, and border line non-sensical stretch to find something remotely naughty about his name it kind of falls flat.

You should have started out with this.

Actually, I couldn’t get past this in the OP. Seriously, thinking that people on the 'Dope didn’t know who Buster Crabbe was? Talk about not knowing your audience.

I was already all :dubious: even before getting to the nickname stuff.

And what about Oscar Homolka and Wally Beery? We all know them, right? And Zasu Pitts!

There were giants in those days…

Darker/dirtier connotations aside, I think the OP has a minor point.

When I hear the name Buster, I do not think hero/ superhero! I think of a boy’s nickname.

When I hear the name Crabbe, I again do not think hero / superhero! I think of somebody with a sour disposition.

And the combo doesnt make it any better. No offense to anybody with those names…and of course there are plenty of other names with similar “problems”. Its certainly not as bad a name like Weakly Wussington or some such, but IMO both names sound sorta anti-heroish and the combo just makes it “worse”.

Cheech and Chong gave him the unfortunate nickname of Buster “The Body” Crabbe.

How about NASCAR driver Dick Trickle? Much more chortle-worthy.

You know, I was surprised this thread was about an American actor… I was wondering why anyone would be starting a thread about a vanished British military frogman

Sounds like the issue of Peter Lupus.

Appropos of not really anything, I have a poster from a Flash Gordon movie* and he’s billed as Larry “Buster” Crabbe. Until seing that it never crossed my mind that Buster might not be his real name.

It’ at work and I am not. It’s either announcing a new series or a feature.

There’s no mystery about what happened to him - the crabs busted back!

There was an architect in a town I used to live in. His name was Dick Loving. I never understood why he didn’t use his full name of Richard.

I’m sorry. I just don’t get the point of this. Bust. her. crabbe(s). Funny? Clever play on words? Does it actually mean anything? I must be stoopid, having even read through any of this anyway.

Buster Crabbe was the only actor to play Tarzan, Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon. Those old serials were REAL entertainment when I was a kid, not having any cell phone or internetz or videogames back then.

I worked for the Red Cross and in the 70’s Buster Crabbe was contacted by the RC to ask if he would be interested in being that year’s celebrity spokesman in TV commercials. He was very unpleasant and loudly demanded a big salary for what would be at most a day’s work for him. What a crab! (get it? a crab? get it? haha!)

I had the thought before selecting Buster Crabbe as a real life example of the idea that there are people who go through life strapped with an unfortunate nickname. I also thought the average Doper might have some examples to share.

For the FUN of it.

If it’s so offensive that Buster Crabbe’s nickname was used as a thread title and that somehow his ranking as a hero from the 30’s and 40’s should outweigh the amusement value of his name as an example, then I really have misread my audience.

I tried twice to get this thread closed after it became obvious that I had hurt some people’s sensitivities and/or senses of humor.

The mods chose to ignore my request to have it closed, so you can do as you will with it.

My last word on the issue!

But that’s just it - what’s so unfortunate about his nickname? What’s so amusing? The word ‘crab’? (haw, haw! he said ‘crab’! haw, haw!) I still don’t get it, maybe if I was 12.

So what was hurt more - your sensitivities or your sense of humour? I assume one or both must have been.

Well, I for one feel that my sense of humor has been ravaged.

I feel so unclean.

Dick Butkus.

Neither was “hurt”, much as you wish it. It’s just that it doesn’t make any sense. Please, explain to me what the funny aspect IS?

Did you even READ my post? I don’t think its that complicated (nor is it particularly sophisticated either).
