But ... How Do I Fold It?

Microsoft’s new Origami device. I could definitely see having one of these if I flew a lot, especially for long flights. Since it runs a full Windows XP OS, I could load up my games …

Although I must admit that, given its name, I am a bit disappointed that it’s not foldable …

Ahhh, that makes a bit more sense. When I heard them talking about this on CNN earlier today, the baby started crying in the middle of the report. I thought I heard them say it would cost $600,000.

That is cool. I want one.

I love tech stuff. I didn’t see anything about processor speeds or other specs other than hard drive. Anyone have any information on that stuff?

Wow! It was amazingly hard to find anything about it, considering it’s in the news and all. But here’s Microsoft’s main page for it:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/umpc/hardware.mspx

Which doesn’t have any ACTUAL specs, however. It shows actual devices made by Samsung and Asus, but no links. How odd. The “Partner” link on the page just goes to a Intel, which has even less information than the Microsoft page. Absolutly nothing on either the Samsung or Asus sites. Alas, my google-fu turns up no specs anywhere.

Wait a sec …

Found what’s apparently a developers’ blog site with this interesting entry:

http://origamiproject.com/blogs/team_blog/archive/2006/03/09/19.aspx

Specs at the bottom of the page. Not official of course, but that’s what I’ve found. But along with those specs are some mighty high prices …

Is there really a market for something like this? It seems like they said, well, there are PDA-sized screens, and there are laptops, but there’s nothing in between. Let’s make one!

How useful is something like this- can’t fit it in a pocket, doesn’t have a keyboard- to me, it’s the worst of all worlds.

I predict the hype will wear off in a few months and they’ll be really cheap come the holiday season.

That’s a very good question, McNew. When I first saw the news about it, I assumed it would be in the upper Plam Pilot price range. If I were still travelling a lot, I’d go right out and buy one in order to have a very light full featured PC on plane flights.

However, having seen the prices quoted in that last link I provided, heck, why not just buy a full laptop?

… how are you supposed to play games on that thing?

'tain’t got no keyboard, 'tain’t got no joystick, SO would take PC games but most of them use the keyboard, duh. They claim it’s good for long trips but people I see with an electronic device on a plane are in two groups: PowerPoint and Games. Most belong to the second group. So, now you’re supposed to spend that amount of cash on a quarter-laptop that’s good for Power Point only?

Maybe they are aiming for the market niche of “dudes with expense accounts whose companies are convinced that those times when a faint snore is heard coming from their office is a ‘power nap’ as opposed to a plain ole ‘nap’”

Perhaps it would find a niche as an electronic book. I will keep an eye on it and consider it when it matures.

nope, not impressed at all, just a Pocket-Peecee on steroids, worst part of all is it runs windoze

on the upside, since m$ is now making an actual computer (more than likely built for them by another vendor, just like all their hardware), maybe the DOJ can really slap them down with a proper monopoly penalty

then again, maybe since i’m obviously biased aganst m$, i’m not the most impartial judge of their product’s merit (or total lack thereof)

hey, at leas i admit i’m biased against the Collective (we are micro$oft, resistance is futile, your software and hardware will be assimilat…)
