I think the main difference is that we have only one election - for our MP. That’s it. One slip of paper with 4 or 5 names on it. The counting is therefore pretty straightforward.

The US, on the other hand, has a lot of elections on one ballot. One could conceivably vote for president, Senator, Representative, member of the legislature, Secretary of state, board auditor, board of education, university board of regents, board of directors for natural resources, bond issues, Clerk of the court, district attorney, county treasurer, etc. etc.

Hand counting would be a time consuming process indeed!

I think we could all live with a little more time being taken, to make sure the whole thing is secure and honest. It’s a trade-off. Save time and get THIS Orange Asshole (Putin’s bitch and a complete clusterfuck) and others like him, or take the time and get it right. Some countries in Europe have already switched BACK to paper.

More seriously, the solution seems pretty obvious to me. Paper ballots, optical scanning and automated counting. Any questions of shenanigans and you can go back and count manually.

But that happening across hundreds or thousands of precincts would be obvious.

And would have to involve a similar number (at least) of people.

ETA: California alone has 22,359 precincts.

Also, if boxes did go missing, someone would know about it. With all this automated computerized crap, who really knows? With boxes and stubs and receipts etc, you can’t just hit the DELETE key or edit the data.

That would be tricky.

We’ve had mail-in voting here in Oregon for many years. It’s one of the few things both sides agree is a good system.

Ballots are mailed out a few weeks before the election. You can fill out your ballot and submit it by mail quickly if you choose, or you can wait right up to election day. You have a deadline to mail or you can drop it off at an approved ballot drop site by 8:00 p.m. on election day. Once submitted, if you like and within 48 hours, you can verify online that your ballot has been received and counted.

I worked as an election official in California for quite a number of years. In my experience, it would be pretty hard to steal boxes of ballots. Nothing happens without witnesses, every transfer of ballots is noted, signed for and a paper trail of their handling created. Ballots are then secured by the elections office responsible for a number of years before being destroyed.

I’m not saying it can never happen. I’m saying based on my experience, it would be an exceedingly rare occurrence.

In Canada, where we have ballot boxes stuffed with paper ballots… If someone tried to steal a box, they would be set upon by the steely-eyed, blue haired ladies that patrol the balloting places. They would be beaten soundly with purses and umbrellas. They would be trussed up with support hose and oversized brassieres, until they BEGGED the RCMP to take them away.

Seriously, someone did try to remove a ballot box in a federal election once. It did not end well for them.

Oh he makes me laugh but he and McCain are given too much good press, too much credit as a check on Trump when they’re nothing but rubber stamps who occasionally get mouthy if it gets them on national tv.

It’s better than the completely spineless, silent GOP and miles better than the actual Trump supporters, but I’m at the “put up or shut up” point with them all.

And of course it would have been terrible if either Clinton had had Chelsea fill in for them in a semi-official capacity, but it would have been slightly less terrible since apparently she has a PhD in international relations, so at least on paper she’s qualified in a way that none of the Trump kids are or will ever be.

Or can you get a doctorate when you’re in the federal penal system?

He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!
