I agree they could have worded it better, but if what Trump is saying is true, then what would they mean by saying he’s incorrect?
“The FAKE NEWS Time magazine wanted me to be Person of the Year. Losing subscriptions and ratings bigly. I said no!”
It is their response whenever anyone makes such a claim. If they say anything more, they know they will be drawn into another one of Trump’s slapfights.
But who else might even be in the running? Putin? Kim? Mueller?
Twitter will be TIME’s “Person” of the Year. I’d lay odds.
The Time tweet does contradict the Trump tweet. It says they specifically do not comment on their choice until publication, meaning they did not call Trump and ask for an interview. It also says he is wrong about how they handle such things, meaning his statement must be a lie. If they actually did what he says, then he would be correct about how they do things.
I would guess the point is to be a bit oblique so that Trump can’t figure out the meaning of what they said. It’s like spelling words in front of a preschooler.
My guess is TIME did not tell Trump that he would PROBABLY be Person of the Year. That’s too specific.
But TIME may have asked for an interview and photo shoot—and told Trump he was in the running.
THAT may be why their response was to say that he is incorrect, rather than that his tweet was a lie.
Has any major news organization flat out called him a liar, even when it was painfully obvious? AFAICS, they all pussyfoot around, pretending they owe him some sort of unearned respect.

TIME worded it perfectly. TIME clearly does not interact with trolls even when they’re the President of the US. IOW they don’t take the bait, a practice that some could stand to exercise around here. :dubious:
For them to have said any more would contradict their policy, namely, “TIME does not comment on our choice until publication.”
I really hope Donald isn’t Man of the Year now, on the off chance people will believe something he said (not a good future course of action).
I would love to think that Time is scrambling to find someone else, because his tweet showed he wasn’t qualified.
How so? It’s the person who influenced the news, good or bad. Trump would be in fine company with Hitler, Stalin, Khrushchev and the Ayatollah Khomeini.
You know who else wasTime’s Man of the Year?
Of course, we all know what happened, right. Trump had someone on his staff call Time in order to try to bully them into making him Man of the Year. They replied with a non-commital stock response about not commenting until publication. So Trump figured he wasn’t going to get to be Man of the Year, even though he’d been entertaining a fantasy about being the only person to get it two years in a row. (Which wouldn’t be true, Nixon did it) So he tweeted a lie to cover his thin-skinned fat ass. Because do you really think Time insists on an interview and a photo shoot? I’m pretty sure Hitler and and Khomeini didn’t agree to an interview and photo shoot.
And as for the news outlets not calling Trump a liar, watch Morning Joe on MSNBC sometime. Because that’s pretty much the entire format. If I made up a drinking game where I took a sip every time Mika rolled her eyes and said “Trump lied AGAIN” , I’d never make it to work.
Because Trump pulled that crap on them this summer by having his aptly named friend David Pecker at the National Enquirer write a hit piece on them, exposing their relationship. Which was sort of common knowledge and not that big of a scandal as neither of them are currently married to anyone else. And his reporters harassed their families including their kids. Then Trump had someone on his staff call Joe Scarborough and offer to pull the piece in exchange for them changing the tone of their Trump coverage. And he said no. Then Trump made up a lie and said that they called him and begged to have the story killed but he refused.

While I recognize that it’s orthogonal to the point you’re discussing, it needs to be pointed out that work is overrated.
I can easily see a scenario where Time contacts Trump saying “Mr President, you are in with a decent chance of winning Person of the Year…oh btw can we have a photoshoot?”
I’m not really sure that trump is a liar. He believes anything that comes into his addled mind. Think about it. Born on third base with a silver spoon in his mouth. He does not believe that he can be wrong. In his clearly dimwitted ‘brain’ everything that comes out of his mouth must be fact.
So, not lying on purpose, just clearly very, very disturbed. Kiim Jong Un has a much better grasp on reality.
Time said they don’t announce the selection beforehand. They know he would blab the news if they even hinted at it.
