Here’s a few thoughts about how he can’t, and that as usual he has no fucking idea what he’s talking about:
“What about closing it to foreigners crossing legally with visas? If the president tried that, it would face the same legal scrutiny as his travel ban of people from certain Muslim-majority countries, which has ping-ponged through the court system. And he’d have an even tougher sell closing off the southern border to legal entry, because he tweeted that his motivation to close the border is for political leverage and not an imminent national security threat, Fresco said.”
He can close the border. It might take time for it to be worked out in the courts, but he can close it at midnight tonight if he wants. He’s undermining the rule of law, and he’s winning. Irrespective of what US law says, Mexico has capitulated and said they’ll be willing to keep asylum seekers in Mexico while they wait for their job.
That’s not actually a capitulation. It’s the government of Mexico extending far, far more humanity, concern, and charity to people in need than the current US administration would ever dream of doing.
If Trump closes the border, it probably wouldn’t last long, but the damage would be done. Trump would leave more of his fingerprints on the military and federal law enforcement. Over time, more of the competent people leave; more of the loyalists get promoted. The new recruits take their cues from the top.
Really, it’s Schrodinger’s Wall at this point. It hasn’t been built yet, but it’s mostly finished; it’s both a Concrete Wall and a Steel Slat Barrier; Mexico will pay for it, Mexico has already paid for it, it’s paying for itself with NAFTA which has now been repealed, the Democrats must pay for it, it’ll be paid for with “Shutdown Money” saved from the shutdown that’s more expensive than the Wall will ever be, which is supported by federal workers who are mostly Democrats but also want Trump to keep it shut down until the Wall is paid for; it’s needed to stop the Caravans that have already been stopped, and there are no more Caravans coming even though word is there’s one on the way right now; and if there’s no wall, we’re going to have to shut down the entire border with the wall that does not exist.
The Wall currently exists in a state of quantum flux where attempting to observe it only changes its nature.
ICE just dropped off 100 families at a local church here in Phoenix, + about 60 at the Greydog station, and has told the church to expect 100 more families manana.
And despite that the relief workers, the people expected to care for these people, were not informed, SOMEONE informed the Arizona Patriots (who are not) so they could be there to yell and throw things at the folk getting off the bus. People who didn’t ask to be dropped at a bus stop, and couldn’t stay on the bus if they wanted.
I realize that when he goes on television it is to talk about the special counsel investigation and not the border wall, but I cannot read this to myself in anyone other than Rudy Giuliani’s voice.
Yeah, if those dumb Dems would just wake up and pass laws dictating what people in Mexico and Guatemala do, we wouldn’t have kids dying on the border! Duh.
